You can see the exact number inside BFHQ on the global rankings list.
Approx 900,000...
But that's the number of accounts. So there is fewer people who actually play. -

There are about 900k - 1 million accounts at this point, and IGN.com estimated that EA has sold over 300,000 copies of Battlefield 2 by the beginning of this year. So it's safe to say that each player on average has 3 accounts.
As for the ammount of active players? Well, I can give an estimation.
There are an average of 4,000-6,000 ranked servers depending on when and how you look. (This is a flawed number, because I'm not including unranked)
The average number of players of all the servers during the whole day numbers at about 3. (Again, not including unranked)
If we assume that if there is the least number of servers on at this time, that means there are 12,000 players on at any given time of the day. (This means for the entire day this doesn't mean there are 12,000 players only, but that BF2 consistantly averages at about 12,000 players on during the whole day. The ammount of actual players is found in the next equation.)
The average of gaming time between all the accounts is about 4 hours, as was once stated by BF2S.com (Remember that they only include accounts that they've loaded onto their site, so this is a flawed number in itself, still it's the best we've got.)
If every 4 hours there were 12,000 different players on, that means there'd be on average 72,000 players who play BF2 daily. (Not weekly, not monthly, not yearly, not hourly. Not overall! Just daily.)
This is a flawed estimation equation, but nothing short of an actual report from EA would give us any better numbers than this.Comment

There are about 7 accounts at this point.
IGN estimated that EA has sold over 6 copies of Battlefield 2142
There are an average of 4-6 servers depending on when you look.
The average of all the servers during the whole day numbers at about 0.000001.
If we assume that there is the least number of servers on at this time, that means there are .012 players on at any given time of the day.
The average of gaming time between all the accounts is about 4 milliseconds.
If every 4 hours there were 0.012 different players on, that means there'd be on average 0.72 players who play BF2142 daily.

You laugh but its true, the server count is less than 200 for me, with the same filters on BF2 I get 700 servers!
Just to make a point on how easy it is to rank up in 3 weeks I have ranked 24 times. You only need 1 ribbon and a silver badge to get 1000 points. I play it to whore it up on the titan guns. The non titan maps are absolutely horrendous, the maps are orange or grey and are badly designed. I play a couple of rounds then come back to bf2 and the difference is stark. I really looked forward to the release of 2142, the demo was average but the game was just pants.Comment

I think they will revert back to modern combat and stay away from the futuristic crap if anything. I mean the the next step would be star wars with friggin laser beams if they kept up at this rate.
That is if they even come back tot he battlefield series. The 2142 franchise or commercial belly flop will never replace BF2.
