    Which Mods to Host?

While I was unable to get any feedback from the community about hosting a Mercenaries mod server I am going to try and see if I can get your input on which mods I should host based on your feedback.

If you have played any of the mods and found a favorite that you would like to see us host, please tell me which ones you think I should host in your opinion and the reason why.

I have decided to set up 2- mod servers for the community on one of my dedicated boxes in Chicago. I am going to try to decide which mods to host based on member feedback to this thread. Once the servers are up and running I will post the server information in this thread for anyone that is interested.

There a bunch of great mods out, so its a tough call to pick two. Of course I love playing my own mod, as well as most of the others that are out.

If your a clan, then there will be lots of competition soon for DCON.

              Re: Which Mods to Host?

Rhino has the best advice, try them all first then start to look at which one is viable from a hosting standpoint. Ill list the ones I find worth downloading and playing, although they all have their own goodies worth exploring.

Just do some game-monitor.com searches and check player count levels before you drop your cash on an empty server. Most players are heading straight for already established servers but it always worth a shot. Always a good thing to have a server setup prior to a new launch or patch. Good luck

PR - The best I have played so far and there are always people playing it. You can find a game whenever you want to play. Tactical gamer and Devfile servers own all for the most part. Great game that is a must play for all BF2 players. This mod runs the cleanest of all of them. Optimized and plays with super FPS and smoothness. They call themselves a mini mod but soon with the way they are going theres nothing mini about it. This one ROCKS

PoE2 - Great mod, highly recommended. Slowly slipping on player count, I wouldnt say the community needs any more servers for this. I am highly anticipating the next release with USA content. This one should pick back up significantly soon.

USI - New release coming soon, best overall vehicle content in my personal opinion. Player counts very low but expect that to change soon with new release. Best overall BF style arcade type gameplay for me so far. Great original maps and lots of goodies to play with.

DCon - This is one of the newer mods but its still in the alpha stages of development and isnt 100% ready for prime time IMO. Its got a few great map remakes like Lost Village and Gazala. You may have some success hosting this but you will be busy populating and dont expect miracles overnight. I lasted a few days with this one but uninstalled and deleted the large files to wait for future conent releases to optimize the experience.

EoD2 I downloaded this one but have yet to install it or play it so I dont have a real opinion here. Players seem to like it but the overall player counts are very low currently. They have been quick to address issues and work on patching. This one should be around a while as word spreads. Great to have a whole new genre in a mod. I will be playing this one over the weekend sometime.

NAW Early on this was one of my favorties. Though slightly rough around the edges they got us some great maps and units to play with early in the BF2 modding game and overall there is a ton of content in this one. I dont know about filling a new server though.

OPK - This was well received early on. Not my cup of tea but alot of people swore by this title. It has seemed to have faded away slowly but dont count them out. One update away from some more action.

I can not put a finger on the best mod , they all have their pro's and cons , but if you want to host a server that will get a lot of use then host a mod on its release so you will get a big influx of player on it .

we aint been a "mini-mod" since v0.3, you cant excatly call a 1.6gb file "mini" :p

we just aint edited the little loading or menu screens yet to get rid of the "mini-mod" bit yet, we are lazy in thous kinda areas that dont effect gameplay

DCOn and PR is your best bet for having players. There are plenty of people who want DCON to fail, but it wont. CAL and TWL are both hosting it, and the next release will make them much stronger.

PR has a good fan base, but I dont see it getting a lot bigger than it is. It will have staying power though, its fans really like it a lot.

with every release we got lots more dedicated fans :)

(each peak shows a new release, any gap in the graph is just where the server went down)

I gave PR a compliment in what I said. I think most of the bf2 players who are going to play mods are already doing so, its just a prediction. I see FH2 pulling some real weight, but the rest will most likely stay with PR and DCON.

You also use too many emoticons

I will need to go and check this mod out also. I went and check out their website and yes I agree it looks pretty cool I will need to register on the forums so that I can keep up with their progress on the next release.
As for the rest of you that posted a reply I appreciate all of your advice and suggestions, however I am still at a loss of which mods to host

I have downloaded and played almost every mod I could get my hands on the past few weeks. And I must admit it's been like being a kid in a candy store.

I think all of the mods are cool and great fun to play. While they all seem to have some minor issues none of them are any worse that the issues seen by all of us in the original game.

I think what I might do is to load a few of the mods on each of the servers and then trying hosting a different mod each month.

Also based on some input I received on the forums here I will host new mods and major updates for existing mods immediately when they are released as a feature for the month to see how popular they are with players.

Not to get to far off subject here but lately it seems that I am one of the dwindling few members left in the community that I belong to that still has a serious interest in BF2 as most of them now seem to be hooked on 2142. While I have played 2142 and the booster for it a few times, I still find that I prefer BF2 over 2142 any day.

Now even know most of our community servers are now 2142 servers, I have managed by using my skillful charm and influence in the community to convince my partners to keep 2- ranked and 2- unranked BF2 servers on one of the boxes in Chicago so that I could continue to develop and support BF2 in our community. Against my better judgment, I have decided to take on the responsibility of developing and growing BF2 again in our community so it is on my shoulders to make it work or I may have to start looking for a new home if support for BF2 dies out all together in our community as I don’t think I can convince my other partners not to replace the servers with something more popular among our members.

Anyway now that I am done rambling on, I wanted to say thanks again to all of your for your advice and suggestions.
I also wanted to say great job to all them mod teams that spend months and months of their free time to develop these mods for the community. Based on some of the mods I have played, you guys need to stop making mods and start creating your own games. Hell they would have to be as good if not better than what EA has been turning out...Keep the mods and updates coming I can’ wait to see what’s next for BF2
