What you're talking about is situational awareness. Some of the greatest gamers of all time have gotten to the point where they have mastered it. You just have to learn to control it, and instead of thinking you're going to shot at, and actually getting shot in the back, you'll be able to turn around and pop the guy before he gets you. 5.1/7.1 speakers can come in handy a hell of a lot(headsets are even better).
I got to a point where I could do exactly that, control what was going to happen just because I had a gut feeling. Then I started playing CS again, and of course, PoE2 and PR, and now DCon, and I've lost it. I used to play around 13 hours a day on the weekends, and about 4-6 every day on the weekdays, constantly watching frag videos(such as Duck & Cover) in my downtime. But I realized my 2.23 GPA reflected this, and I don't play as much(2.97 now, and after this semester I should be in the low 3's).
