The best I can help you with this is to urge you to play with a friend with VOIP and let him guide your fire. That is the way to use arty in very effective way. When using a friend you can use him as a marker in the map. He will tell you to which direction from his location you should turn the turret. After you get your fire to correct spot, he'll quide where to to shoot in that area by using eye contact to the targets and your shots.

I've never thought to look for it, since I know the maps fairly well, but maybe their dot on the map will blink when they spot?

this little bit of info helped me
Tip: When you spot a location, this places a spotting camera 20 meters above your current location and angled 20 degrees downward towards the ground. On flat ground this places the focus of the camera about 37 meters in front of you. It is important to take this into account because this view is what your team mates within artillery vehicles will see when they use your spot. This camera will always face where you are facing. How far up or down you’re looking doesn’t affect the angle of the camera
