    Artillery is confusing

Anyone else find artilery really hard to use? Maybe Im doing it wrong, but I don't get it. I know how to spot, and how to cycle through cameras, but am I supposed to try to guess where to aim my vehicle? Right now Im having to fire and see where my missle lands, then try to correct it somehow, but I don't get it. Theres no way Im going to hit something on the first shot, and by the time I fire again, the target is gone.

Welcome to good ol' Desert Combat and BF1942. There was no 'point-and-click' arty back then. Everything was done manually.

When you have a target, right click, note where the area is, bring up your mini-map, direct the vehicle or launchers in that direction, then fire :). See where it lands and make adjustment accordingly.

ya....having people know how to spot is a whole other problem. My team was getting raped because noone even new that arty existed aparently. I kept spamming chat about spotting targets, then half way through the round they say that they dont know what arty is....:hmm:. After I explained how to do it, they started spotting, and I finally got a chance to use the arty. Wasn't too effective since I never hit anything.

Also, when I switch to a cam after someone spots, 9/10 times there is nothing in view. No tank, apc, or even infantry.

I thought this was supposed to be a modern version of the game on those maps. Like BF2 with new maps basically. Thats why there are still jets and stuff. Seems like they would have a better arty system then the ol' guess and check.

The whole point of an artillery spot is to see if you are hitting your target and so the shooter can adjust.

The artillery system works great and is just like DC. All you have to do is get a spotter who knows you have to right-click to zoom in, and then press Q and request Arty. It is much better then random stuff falling out of the sky if you ask me. :)

Ha best part of DCF 73 Easting, infiltrating the Iraqi main to destroy the scud launcher. Haven't played DC much though.

Nope, I believe you're misunderstanding what Desert Conflict is about.

First, it's not as modern as you'd think. IIRC, BF2 era is about 2010. Desert Combat was based on The first Gulf War. So actually, we're going back in time :) (still 'modern' none-the-less)

Secondly, long, long ago a mod for BF1942 was released. It was called 'Desert Combat'. It's popularity and fan base sky rocketed. It brought a game based on WWII to a more 'modern' era - The gulf war.

Do you know why Desert Combat became so popular? Because of the FUN factor. The game truly was a blast to play. Hell, 1942 was a blast to play. However, BF2 exterminated the fun factor as soon as they added the 'lock-on' system and the stats system. Now, most players play for stats. While I do enjoy getting rewards and like the ideas of ranks as it's something to 'shoot for'; stats simply take the fun out of playing. Players are more concerned about geting 50 hours while being a sniper instead of getting rid of the damn T90 which is destroying our team.

Desert Conflict strives to bring back the good old days of Desert Combat to the new engine of BF2. Desert Combat/BF1942 was completely based on skill. Nothing in the game, and I mean nothing was automated. Everything was dumb fire. Artillery, AA, AT, Aircraft weaponry - ALL of it was dumb fire. If you wanted to hit something, you better have had good aim and lead your target. DC_No_Fly_Zone - Anyone?

Dog fights were based on skill, armor battles were based on skill, and Artillery was based on skill. While it may sound like the game is to 'hard'; it's not. But what it is, or was, is extremely fun to play. And so far, Desert Conflict has brought back that fun factor.

How much fun can a game be where I just have to point and click on an area and next thing you know the half of the opposing team is dead? True, it may be realistic, but BF2, and especially DCon isn't based on realism. It's an arcade game. If you're looking for realism, check out PR or Armored Assault - they are both great resources for realistic gameplay.

While DCon era can be considered modern, you have realize it's a game which is meant to be fun! One of the most played games out there today is Counter-Strike. Why? Because it's fun! If you want to stay alive, it takes skill. Someone who has never played the game before is going to pretty much get owned; no doubt about it. Whereas in BF2, anyone can get in a jet and win dog fights. Granted it takes some skill to fly, but take the gunner seat in the F-15 for example. When gunning from the 2nd position, a private can take the gold. That doesn't say much for the need of skill in BF2. Sure, having skill in BF2 helps greatly to winning/survival, but it surly isn't a necessity.

I had no problem with the arty, but I guess it is confusing to those who haven't played DC. You just have to learn it. There is a learning curve for almost everything in the game for those who haven't played DC.

If anyone has played with the arty system in POE2, it sounds like the same thing... no one likes to spot in that mod either. :)

This Mod is why EA made BF2 in the first place.
They resurrected it with the new engine, and called it DC again.
                        BRAVO !
I will go as far as to say that BF2 is a "Mod" of DC.
It is definately a result of...

I don't find the artillery hard to use. But I was a longtime DC arty whore, and have been using DCon's arty for months now, so I'm used to it.

Just practice at it, but be careful, some BF2 smacktard will many times hop in and drive it away with you.

As good as I know, there is no other aid than the camera view. If you can't get your shots to show in the camera view, then you just have to guess better. I'm a bit frustrated with the system, there is no aid to tell even roughly where that camera view is located in the map.

The best I can help you with this is to urge you to play with a friend with VOIP and let him guide your fire. That is the way to use arty in very effective way. When using a friend you can use him as a marker in the map. He will tell you to which direction from his location you should turn the turret. After you get your fire to correct spot, he'll quide where to to shoot in that area by using eye contact to the targets and your shots.
