Good 3d moddling tool

Ok im starting my own mod and i need to know of a good 3d modeling tool thats compatible with the bf2 editor and bf2 ect.

Preferably free but i will pay for one as long as its not like $100+

because so far all i can find that i know works with bf2 is 3d max studio and its like $160 or more

any help is appreciated

3DSMax is good.
And some people use Milkshop (correct?) as well due to it being free.

I just got it but it is way over my head, I need a 3D render of an Oil rig tri cone drill bit that spins (dont ask its a long story).

Any help would be apreciated like
"How to" links or good tuts the 1's on the Blener site suck.

Hey , there will be no discussion of pricey . The most popular programs that work for bf2 are , Maya , 3ds max 8 or gmax (which is a free version of 3ds max that was made for games ) its kinda old now and used very much but its worth a play around with that .
