    cant set anti aliasing

hey all i have bf2 all settings on high but i want graphics smooth so i go to graphics and turn on anti aliasing to 2x to test it and when i turn it on it says you need to restart the game to save the settings so i do
i restart the game then go to graphic settings to see if it is now on 2x but it still says off then i try setting it to 2x again and again it says you must restart the game to save settings .... wtf why wont anti aliasing turn on ?

this may make me sound like a uber noob but do all graphic cards support 2x/4x anti aliasing?

I don't think you need a restart for it to work... If you do restart it will still show no AA, that's excactly as for me. Try just joining a server without restart and see if it's smooth. If not, then try restarting, and disregarding the AA off, and just play. Then see if it's smooth.

It would help if you provided relevant information, like what GPU (graphics card) you have.

nVidia has a seperate control panel that usually auto-loads, and that may have AA permanently off.

:edit: Start a BF2 game after adjusting the Video settings... It will optimize shaders and all that crap. Then it should stay on.

        ^ ah, well done, Doggie.

Sometimes bf2 fails and doesn't actually change the config file. It's located in you "My Documents" folder, look for Battlefield 2 (it's somewhere in there). Change it from 0 samples to 2.

Yes, though the performance could be less than satisfactory. Nvidia gpu's can do 2x,4x, and 8xaa (8x must be forced through the control panel), while ati can do 2x,4x, and 6x.

I really can't remember for the exact location of the file, but it's there somewhere. :p

You need to edit my documents\bf2\profiles\00x\video.com and add the line:VideoSettings.setAntialiasing 2Samples

nvidia GPUs can do 16x, 32x in SLI mode. It's crazy smooth but the FPS will drop like mad on 16x, maybe 20fps on average.

                what gpu do you have?

it probably doesnt support it, see my old one could do 4x but this one can do 8x

Thank you for finding the correct location, I forgot. :p

While you are correct, only dual 7950gx2's (quad sli) had the option for 32xaa, and then it's going to be completely unplayable at anything higher than 1024x768. Right now even with the 8800 series 16xaa is still too hard, which is why they invented tsaa, which allows them to have almost 16xaa, but with the performance hit of 4xaa.

TSAA? Explain? All I heard from nVidia was Coverage Sampling, unless you mean transparency AA?

BF2 is barely, barely playable at 16x AA for me.

Sorry, it's CSAA for the 8800 series (the only cards that support it).

For more info, just go here:

and just do a search for Coverage Sampled Antialiasing (CSAA).

you were clicking the 'apply settings' tab weren't you?? Yes of course you were :) but I would think that any card incapable of running any type of AA or AF wouldn't even play the game to begin with. I found the best way to do it is to leave AA off in the game menu and force it on in your graphics control panel. There's a lot more alterations you can make there as well.

I had the same problem at first. I went into my gfx card setting and changed the AA there. Then went into BF and set it to match, hit apply, restart the game, then it was fine.
