    Rebuilding pc 865pe/3.0 Northwood

'Lo folks. I just did a cheap rebuild so I could add a couple more sticks of 512mb ddr400, and I noticed that my northbridge heat sink was unusually hot. I could just barely keep my finger on it so I'm guessing it was around 55-57C. This was while the pc was open (obviously) and I was doing a routine windows xp installation, so it wasn't like I was taxing it that hard.

Does anyone know if 865pe boards tend to run hot? Reckon I ought to slap a fan on the the heat sink? I'm sure I've got a 60mm floating around somewhere, only problem is that it would be LOUD unless I tinkered with the volts. Maybe an aftermarket cooler? Or just keep an eye on it for a while? I'm concerned that when I close up the case and start pushing it that it might fry. I had planned to o'c the processor a bit (can't push the fsb much because of the bargain-basement ram) but now I'm not so sure.

    Rest of specs:
    3.0C 800mhz /512kb
    Shuttle AB60R (865pe/ICH5 chipset)
    4x512mb ddr400
    2x160gb SATA Samsungs in RAID0
    200gb WD EIDE
    x800xt AIW

Edit--I've noticed that Abit uses active cooling on their 865pe boards IC73, but Asus does not (p4c800, etc.). Hmmm.

i think thats fine mate my old nForce 4 boards used to get in the 90's lol but with my new 590 SLI from EVGA i have a loud heatsink that came with it so either deal with high sound or get a after market cooler

btw thanks for your motivation to build a brand new PC, the thing rocks

Thanks for response. I have a "fan only" connector coming out of my psu that delivers 5-7-12V depending on the PSU temp. Going to give that one a try on the assumption that my PSU never gets very hot at all.

Oh, and 'twasn't a brand new one. I had a gigabyte of ddr400 fall into my lap recently, and decided to move my system to a mobo that would support it. By the time I sold my prescott, I was only out ~$30 and 512kb cache, and up 1 gb and a decent socket 478 MOBO.

I thought I was going to build a new pc in April, when the 6420's (4mb cache, same price as the 6400's) are released, but the 6450's (1333fsb) are right around the corner from that.
