Major Sound Issues - please help!

Well I've had BF2 installed for some time now and it's been running fine. So tonight I was slightly pi55ed off that the sound went all crappy during loading and in game. So much so that it no longer resembled what I should be hearing.

Anyway, first thing I do is test the sound in a few other games and it was fine, so i decide to reinstall BF2. This went without a hitch and patched up OK etc, then I tried once more to play. Same result. So I'm thinking that it may be a problem between BF2 and my sound card. So I un-installed the card and reinstalled it and BF2 wouldn't start. I figure this is to do with the rpofile.con file or the sound settings since I keep them, so I removed them and presto, BF2 starts. Obviously I now had to change all my settings again. Did sound first as that's where the problem was. As soon as I change the drop down menu from Software rendered to X-Fi and hit apply the game CTD's. Fire it up again and the setting is back on software. So I removed the game once more and put it back and still the same problem. I'm not sure what's going on here, I can only presume there must be driver error somewhere, but everything else and all other apps work fine.

Short of doing a complete format and install of XP again I'm all out of ideas. Anyone heard of something similar?

    Asus A8N-SLI Deluxe
AMD Opteron 175 Dual Core 2.41 GHz cooled by Arctic Cooler 64 Pro
2 x XFX 7900 GTX XXX Extreme 512 MB cooled by Zalman
PNY 2GB Copper Housed Gaming RAM
    2 X 36 GB Raptor 10,000rpm SATA HDD in RAID-0
    WD 250 GB Caviar
    Sound Blaster X-Fi Fatal1ty

OK I managed to fix it, but now I'm back to square one. WTF is going on?

Bump. Any help on the original problem before I did the reinstall etc?

YIp having similar problem here - think I found the issue.

When it happens - close BF 2 and restart it . Is sounds still a problem ? If not , I put it to odd quirk.

On the other end - if sound is still a problem - check if by some sad fluke , one of your memory stick is not border line of faulty or check for HEAT problem in the PC.

In my case HEAT was causing it - ( Had removed BF 2 - defrag and reinstalled and problem was still there). Came on and off...

Mind you been only a few days now that it seems OK - one never know if it comes back ....if it does and you and I and many more expereince the same thing - I suspect something might be going on , on the online side of things such as PB updates maybe in the back ground causing problems ....

Did that and as soon as it's changed to X-FI it crashed. Anyway that was fixed, I edited my post. Sound problem in game was still there. But the other day I thought bugger it I'll try again. About 5 mins into the round all was back to normal, so I can only presume that some dodgy sound code was knocking around somewhere that's now gone.
