Samarlian is correct. You must remove any previous nVidia drivers from your system before you add the new ones. nVida makes a removal tool to do this or you can use Add/Remove in the Control panel to remove them. I would also recommend doing a registry clean (RegCleaner) too to make sure you get rid of any loose nVidia info.
Then install the new drivers.
If the screen still goes black and then back to desktop....does it make a clicking sound (click, click) befor you go back to desktop?
My son's computer had the same issue with his ATI graphics card, and the new drivers did not fix the problem. I needed to change the graphics resolution and refresh rate in Windows before going onto BF2. BF2 did not like the original settings and therefore would just go black, click, click, and then kick me back to the desktop.
Once I finally got settings BF2 liked, I could then into the game and re-adjust the video settings in the options menu.
