Re: Why do people cheat?
In one word anonymity.
Lets face it, no matter the motivation people have for cheating, whether it be poor gaming abilities , low self esteem, a need for attention, what ever it is, they cheat because the they can, and they can because of anonymity.
There's only a handful of people who would actively cheat in any other endeavor that happens "live", with the other players present. When all one has to do once caught cheating is generate a hash key, or find another email address to create another profile, , it makes it very easy for a person who other wise wouldn't have the nuggets to cheat.
They don't risk embarrassment, or becoming outcasts, they risk nothing other then losing an identity that they knew might have to be thrown out anyway.
They simply cease to become that player that cheats, or was caught cheating, and become some one else. Whether it's through a new BF2 disc or any of the many utilities they've created to circumvent the detection of their identity.
It's not that PB doesn't work, it does, I'd say 1/4 of all the efforts of cheaters is finding ways to re-enter servers without having PB detect them as who they are. If they literally did have to buy another BF2 disc, or new hardware you'd see a lot less cheaters. It's the ability to be anonymous that keeps them coming back in droves. I don't think there are many, in fact I wouldn't be surprised if a 1/3rd of the cheaters active today are just alias' of names already on the ban lists.

At one time I'd answer the question with the reason being low self esteem. The need to be good or even better at something then most other people.
But when it comes to BF2 I wouldn't doubt the rankings have a lot to do with it. The pursuit of having their 15 minutes of fame, will make people do a lot of things. Which include cheating , glitching, TKing and other nefarious things.
