    Chopper vs. Jet effectiveness.

It's a vague topic, but I'll explain a little better....

Played BF1942 a few years ago, just now got into BF2 so I'm not a total n00b to the series. Having said that I had a question for some of the long-time players concerning choppers vs. jets and their effectiveness while helping your team capture flags and defend flags already captured.
In the 9 days since I've had BF2, I've managed to become a fairly proficient chopper pilot.

    I can:
    - Land and takeoff without hitting anything.
    - Hover over objectives (flags, enemy vehicles, etc.)
    - Perform some "trick" maneuvers (loops, rolls, etc.) in the various attack choppers.
    - Use the rockets to kill enemy vehicles/troops including other choppers.
    - Get to / keep the gunner in a good position.

I've managed to down a few jets as well, though I attribute that more to luck than anything. Now, I have managed to fly the jets as well. While I can fly (and land) the jets without too much of a problem, but I think in the 47 minutes or so that I've spent in a jet, I killed two choppers, one tank, and one other jet.

I'm all about teamwork and I would rather have a score of 15 and win overall than be the Rambo on the losing team who has a bazillion kills which is the reason I fly the choppers.

I do get irritated while I've hanging out over a friendly base and the local jet jockey does and pass and uses his cannons to down me - but I'm sure I have the same effect on the mass of enemy troops my gunner is killing.

I, of course, have had my *** handed to me by jet pilots repeatedly. However, I've done my fair share of ground support while piloting the attack choppers (Z-15?) which is their intended purpose which finally leads to my question.

Should I attempt to become a good jet pilot, or just stay with flying the helo's?

My perception thus far is that the jets are mainly air-to-air even though they all carry bombs. Most of the jets I've seen have been to involved with having a pissing contest to see who can shoot down however many other jets.

I do understand that establishing air superiority is helpful and I have no problems with jet pilots who shoot down everything in the air that isn't on their team, but roughly 75% of the jets I've seen have no interest in shooting down the enemy transport or attacks choppers.

Feel free to share some input on the topic and be somewhat n00b friendly when doing so.

      Re: Chopper vs. Jet effectiveness.

I would say both, that is what I am attempting...I actually very rarely try and cap flags alone in the chopper, I will definetly go do down and support ground troops attempting to take it, but I have had to many ERYX's end my fun when I am down there alone :)

Jets can be an excellent defense tool, if I am flying a jet, and an enemy is spotted, or a uav goes above one of our flags, I will go there right away. Also, as a fighter pilot your MAIN JOB is to take out the enemy jets/bombers, so they cannot wreak havoc on your poor ground allies :)

I learned to fly in the F-35B, so I had a pretty rocky road going up against the J-10 whores when I first started, but I think it was a good idea in the long run, because it taught me to be "paranoid" while flying. It is always a good idea to be looking behind you, very often.

I personally get more kills in the chopper, not the jet, in a single round. IMO, they are much better close support weapons, although a great jet pilot is as well, if he gets the enemy jets down first :)

The priorities as I see them in a jet are:

      1. Other jets
      2. Any type of AA
      3. Attack choppers
      4. Transport choppers
      5. Tanks
      6. FAV/DPV
      7. Strafing Infantry

That is the order I use when trying my best to help the team get the win. If I am going for my own points (sometimes the team is good enough I really do not need to worry about, or sometimes I am just selfish I guess :) )I normally take out jets, then strafe/bomb the runway...

All my tips are from my expierience on Wake Island, but I am sure they apply on every other air map as well....

Sorry if it was a little disjointed, I am kind of in a hurry to get out the door, but wanted to have a reasonable response.

      *EDIT* and have fun :)

        Re: Chopper vs. Jet effectiveness.

as colony said - have fun
but a PROMISE you, no matter how good you think you became in a week
you have MONTHS of playing before you get even above average
"flying" skills is the smallest part of being good pilot
you have to learn the maps - for all the fixed mobile AA sites, flags, hiding places, etc

then you have to learn how to work with your gunner

if you are in attack helo - capping flags is the LAST thing you should be doing
KILL armor - let your teammates cap flags

and when your gunner gets good enough, u will have to kill other attack helos

All while avoiding AA and jets and other attack helos

last comment for now - reads as many posts as you can in this Forum
        Most are very helpful

and also - find a clan to train/play with
your skill will increase much faster when playing with a good team

good luck and welcome to BF2

        ps
MOST jets with high kills are vs Uncap flags (eg Essex)
so do not get enamored with their stats

          Re: Chopper vs. Jet effectiveness.

Good heli pilots are plenty, but not many jet pilots are really that good or useful to their team. Spawnraping J-10's is nice, but who can really keep killing tanks or defend flags or help ground troops with the cannon? Jet pilot is more valuable to team than a heli, but becoming a good one seems to be next to impossible.

Briefly, jets can do and kill whatever whenever. Choppers can only kill some targets and not everywhere at the same time. Thus jet takes more practice. And don't say jets are easy to fly, they are easy to fly, but using them is something very difficult. For example metallica, who claims to be and apparently is a good jet pilot doesn't really impress me or many others. Actually last time I saw a decent ground attacking jet pilot was before jets became missile magnets.

            both....

            fighters = control skies

bombers and choppers = take advantage of air power.

            both.

Well, a fighter pilots FIRST JOB is to keep the enemy jets out of the air, so the ground forces are free to do what they need to do, and metallica does that extremely well. I am sure he can bomb and strafe ground targets as well, but he knows that the main thing you have to do as a jet pilot, is take out enemy air vehicles.

I hate it when a guy gets in the jet, bombs 3 ground targets, and gets shot down right away by the enemy jet, because he did not even care to look for the jet. Then the enemy jet has at least 60 seconds of window before he knows that pilot gets back up, so he A. only has to look out for one jet, and B. can do whatever he wants to ground forces, without fear of retribution from above.

                Re: Chopper vs. Jet effectiveness.

Believe whatever you want, but a chopper crew is perhaps the most important vehicle if you want to win the game, because a chopper can DIRECTLY influence the outcome of the battle around contested flags in a level which a jet can not, no matter how good the pilot is.

                However, jets eat choppers.

Have fun with experiencing flight in BF2, I am looking forward for your complaint posts about the jets inbalance and missile hit detection bugs. No pun here, just speaking for you for the nearest future :P .

                  Choppers > Jets for infantry/kills/support

They are in the middle of the action and can directly see what they need to kill. While jets is more of educated guessing and randomness.

A lesson you learn flying choppers is that if you can only "own" if the enemy's jets are being used by people that lack skill.

Jets > Choppers. I think giving some A2A missiles to the chopper pilot could contribute to address this issue though.

Yeah if a jet sees a chopper, the jet will win.

But in organized play, the chopper is the one who wins or loses the battles.

Jets fight jets, and occasionally take out choppers/bomb tanks.

The choppers kill everything on the ground.

But in just a normal, pub server, jets rule everything if the other team doesn't have a good jet pilot.

both but if u really wanna do one only then go for choppers, learn soloing and ull be able to TV jets at full speed

there arent too many jet pilots that are good with the machine gun so ur safe in the chopper but if u come across a good jet pilot u better be able to fly low and hide

                          Re: Chopper vs. Jet effectiveness.

Jets can be a thorn in your side but if your friendly jets/AA keep them in check, the helicopter can easily "win" the round for its team. If (for example) my chopper is able to take out the enemy heli and 80% of ground armor, the team has zero excuses for losing...

I've seen jets owning up PLENTY of times, only to see them lose the round anyway. Why? Jets don't win rounds... they just harass the enemy jets and helis: otherwise, the ground troops/armor does the work and if the other team isn't capping or defending flags, that air power is useless.

                          That's obvious though...
