I've played BF2 plenty without any problems for quite a while now. Though, I recently upgraded to an LCD widescreen (16:10, 1440x900, acer), and now when I try to load BF2, I see the splash screen, the screen goes black, my monitor says AutoConfigure, couple of jitters, BF2 simply closes, and I'm back on my desktop.

I remember when I first played the BF2 demo when I had integrated graphics. The problem I have now is reminding me of this. The same double click, BF2 tries to load, and simply gives up.

I've read the threads about widescreen support and all. I've done all the changes suggested (e.g., changing the target thing in properties of the shortcut, changing the video.con settings to my resolution), but I'm still getting the same problems.

Is BF2 coded to keep widescreen players from playing at all? Or have they just made it so that widescreen is not completely supported, and the screen looks all stretchy? If it's the latter, then it's possible that I'm having some sort of other problem with my hardware/software other than the monitor.

My specs:
CPU: Pentium 4 2.8ghz
GPU: x700 Radeon 256mb
RAM: 1gig
Monitor (again): Acer 16:10 widescreen, 1440x900

Oh, and I have the same problem with 2142, if that matters.

Did you dump your video cache and allow the game to re-optimize? Have you tried reinstalling your video drivers for the heck of it?

In "Simon doesn't know the terminology" language, it goes like this.

BF2 ran your video drivers through some tests and wrote up a bunch of information that it utilized to later make the monitor work. If you changed monitors it shouldn't matter, but it may. By clearing out these files, the game will have to make new ones and everything has a possibility of being peachy again.

The files to dump are in the folder:
C:\Documents and Settings\Your Name\My Documents\Battlefield 2\mods\bf2\cache

Dump the folders in that folder. Restart game and it will recreate those files as you get into maps.

there is a chance other files in your BF2 folder have become corrupted. If you move the entire Battlefield 2 folder out of your My Documents folder the game will create a complete new one. This solves a few peoples problems and may help you too.

Well, dumping the cache didn't work, but removing the Battlefield 2 folder from my documents seems to have done the trick. What you said about BF2 writing down data for the monitor makes sense, because obviously BF2 got confused when I switched monitors. Good thing you told me this, 'cause I was about to lug my huge CRT monitor back in here and test BF2 with it.

its usually just the video.con in the live profile that needs deleting rather than the whole my docs bf2 folder.

bf2 does not like widescreen resolutions. ive just been through the same issues myself, on your desktop,bf2 icon, right click and goto properties. there's a thread that says target with writing to the side, you need to add this text at the end of that text, +menu 1 +widescreen 1 +szx 1440 +szy 900 . so the string should look like this- "C:\Program Files\EA GAMES\Battlefield 2\BF2.exe" +menu 1 +widescreen 1 +szx 1440 +szy 900

ok, you need to go to my documents/battlefield2/profiles and delete your active profille probably 001, make sure the string is still in the desktop shortcut and try reload you will have to reset your profile back to how you had it but yhis should work, it wont be your monitor at fault its just that bf2 doesnt like widescreen settings. i had all this when i changed my normal pc monitor to a lcd hdtv so i could play bf2 in hd @ 1280x720p, ps when bf2 does fire up be sure and dont edit the video setting ie res or qaulity (the setting under it) as this will also change the resolution, you can edit the lower settings ie shadows,lighting,distance,antialiasing
