I have about 200 hrs in jets, mostly on Oman. My kdr is about 6:1. I've actually improved dramatically over the last six months but I feel like I have a few more tricks to learn. One thing I struggle with is taking down the MiGs on a regular basis.
Some main problems for me are:
1) The MiG turns tighter and seems to break missile lock/avoid missiles even with plenty of space between me and them. It seems as soon as they bank, I bank but I just can't stay locked on long enough to get the kill. I have tried leading them keeping my reticle above them just a bit. This works well against the Su but not as well against the MiG.
2) When I lose sight in nose cam, usually during a turn or a climb, I have to switch to flyby or chase cam but by then they are going left and I am going right. I always seem to chose the wrong way to go.
One of our admins told me the easiest way to take down a MiG in the F-35 is to quickly fire 3 missiles then switch to bomb mode while the missiles are in flight. He swears it works most of the time. Well, I tried that but it didn't seem to work for me. This guy is a realitive noob to flying but he has figured out something because he was shooting me down with ease the other day. I am just not sure if it's the three missiles/swith to bombs thing.
My buddy Kiotee says it's all about throttle. I have noticed that slowing down helps keep the MiG in range to an extent but often times flares are deployed giving the pilot a chance to get away.
Thanks for any pointers.
