I need a good graphics card(any recomendations)

I currently have a ATI radeon 9800. It runs BF but with black patches all over the scenery.

Has anyone got any recomendations for an AGP(yep i know, ancient) slot graphics card between about £70 and £120. (I dont know what that is in $)

If it helps, ive just found my actual computer specs and they are:
AMD Athlon 64 1.8GHZ
1.5Gb RAM
40GB HD
I know that the BF manual suggests cards but i wanted to know if anyone had or new of a good card that runs BF even though it isnt in the manual.

AGP the only thing to go for is the GF 7800GS then, you can get some that allready are OC, since im from Denmark i can recomend a UK site hence i dont no eny :-)

the X1950 Pro is a new AGP card that is faster than the 7800GS (posted above) and cheaper, its a good buy

If you can get an AGP 1950 card then grab it. I use a PCI express 1950 and am very happy with the performance for BF2.

if your psu is up to snuff, an x1950pro card is the current agp boss.

--HOWEVER--

if it was my dollars (or if i was spending 16-ource british monetary units), i would go for a 7600gt (they make AGP flavors now), and save the extra for a future upgrade. if you can find an x1650 agp card for a good price, they are pretty good, too (but NOT x1600pro!).

edit: just looked at your specs again. definitely don't go nuts on a high-end agp card.
edit 2: 9800 should run bf2 just fine with lower settings, 1024x768. blocky patches indicate a potential heating problem. recommend you buy a cheap can of compressed air to try and solve the patchy problem before going out and buying a new gpu. it can really make a diff--with the stock cooler, my x800xt would get clogged up every six months (we have three pets and my wife likes to put arm&hammer on the carpet before she vacuums EVERY week). when it got clogged, you could tell because the fan would stay on high all the time, i would start getting artifacts on the screen, and the temps would go into the upper 80C.

do you have ATItool .24? you can monitor your temps there, and it will tell you if heat may be your problem.

Hi, BTW Tom its not the actual graphics card that is giving you the black patches. i used to get this (its like tar has covered everything?) so i rolled back my driver by a few fixes and it solved it. i've got an ATI radeon X600 and there was a problem with the newer drivers that they released.
Try this first as it might save you a few quid

I already tried some of the things suggested. I completley re built my PC, re installed windows, drivers for sound cards etc. I only installed the original drivers for the graphics card so nothing was the latest version.

Also, i could spend ages testing different ideas to get it working properly, but i also wanted to get a more modern card. I had already tried upgrading with ATI X1300, big mistake. As it turns out, BF wont run on that one.

BTW Scinto what thread did that comment 'this threads going to get scintowned' come from. That cracks me up for some reason.

as far as compatibility is concerned, it doesn't matter. all current mainstream gpu's are going to come in gddr2, gddr3, or (very recently and expensively) gddr4
