troubles starting bf2

I haven't used computer for a long time (lack of internet) but tonight I finally got the net back up. So I start pathing my battlefield to the latest version and then tries to run it. But it will not run. Instead it first shows the spalsh screen, and then it just freezes with a black screen. I can press the escape button a few times and it returns back to the desctop. I discovered that by using the alt-tab i get an "error!" message, but I'm unable to read it, as it is hiden in the black screen and it will not show... any ideas guys

b4 u patched it, was bf2.exe renamed by any chance?

I recall some fun hours spend with mods which included renaming the bf2.exe.
any idea how to fix the problem?

Just rename it back, patch and rename again.

well I now have a bf2.exe file in the battlefield 2 folder. I have just renamed it from BF2.exe (don't know if it makes any difference). I repatched it again and yet there is still no improvesments. Still the same problem. I have just downloaded updates for my gfx card and the new directX, still no change.
