Shooting low from a tank or APC

I always seem to get shot even when i'm really close to a tank or an APC and lying down.
However when I'm in a tank I cannot aim the guns that low and can only shoot way above the enemy soldiers head.
How do people do it ? I can understand getting killed if its the splash damage from a tank shell or missile but its from the guns that i get killed.

Any tips for aiming at the ground close to the tank while you're in it ?

Just hop onto the damn tank. They can't kill you without getting out (or swinging into a pole or tree).
