No, that's just the easiest way to retrieve your CD key if you've lost it, which isn't the current problem.
Edit: OP could still register his game if he wants to--either via EA link or their web site because he still has the CD key. In fact, that might make getting a replacement CD a tad easier. hmmm.
At the moment, a mini-image would solve your problem, but for the long-term, I would put in a trouble ticket with EA and see what the procedure is for replacing a lost/broken CD. I would not buy SF stand-alone as a solution because you will invariably need to reinstall, and then you'll be up poo-crick with a great expansion pack...but no BF2 core to play it on.
