hey guys,
i have an ATI Radeon x1800 Pro (i dont want responses like ati sux or anything else other than i straight answer). and ive been having problems running AF. my gun and arm will go black with a metallic shine to it. this happens sometimes in bf2 and never in bf2142. i also get visual glitches where the screen will go black and then come around to the game again. this happened in 2142 and i had to update my drivers and it solved the problem in 2142. now its happening in bf2 (the screen going black NEVER happened in bf2 unless it was gonna crash to desktop) my question is why does it do this? am i overclocking my gfx card? could updating my drivers caused a problem with a game that has a lwoer demand on gfx than 2142?

The whole shiny model thing is to do with specular reflections and bump mapping, you need both of them on for specularity to work. I don't think there's anything in BF2 that lets you change it though, in CS it's a simple console command.

As for visual glitches, is your card overheating? Use ATI Tray Tools and see (Use the overclocking tool, set it to scan for artifacts)...

Is it possible that there is not enough power being supplied to your card, maybe it has an extra PCI-E power plug thing.
It could be that you are playing BF2 are higher graphics settings and thus requiring more from the card. Plus if you are overclocking it, then underpowering is most likely the problem. If you need more voltage then look up Volt mods or Pencil mods on the Internet.

That said, a X1800 should be more than good enough to play BF2 at max without ocing so maybe it is something else...

ya ill take some screenshots of it when it happens again (shouldnt take more than 2 seconds) i just dont want to overclock my card

overheating is most likely cause of intermittent graphical glitches. install atitool v.024, set it to monitor your temps every 10s, play for a while (until the glitches start occuring), and note your temps using ati tools "show log file" command.

how long has it been since you cleaned out your case? is it well ventilated? with stock cooling, i had to remove my x800xt from the case in order to get compressed air into all the vents of the card...and out blew a den full of dust bunnies.

65 Celcius seems high for a graphics card at idle!

Mine idles at about 38C at thats with stock cooling

Yeah. 65 celsius is very high for idle. Might want to check how your airflow in and out operates? If it's too low than the card temp will rise, giving you lower performance and glitches.
