Downloaded PRMM last night and let me just start by saying this is one of the best I've played. When I originally bought BF2 this is what i thought it'd be like.
The only thing I'd say about downloading it is that finding the correct version was tricky ie fileplanet has version 0.32 which CTD all the time. If the PRMM website was a tad more up to date and user friendly more'd probably download it. Took me 1hr 30min to download 1.4 with a torrent app (good considering 1.62gigs).
Started playing the game then, not sure if it was just me (think 1-2 others said it) but the game seems to reset shaders etc. No prob there i think resolutions etc need to be med-high to run certain maps.
The 1st thing that struck me was that the graphics are much sharper (may have been the shaders etc lol) and the soldier kits look much more detailed than BF2. Kits are now more job centric and gun accuracy is MUCH MUCH higher.
Started on the British jungle map (forget name) and did the usual of sprinting to the enemy fire.......bad idea, i didn't even see who shot me. Tried out a few kits and basically got owned. IN PR whoever sees who 1st will generally win the engagement. One of the other things is the difficulty in IDing friend from foe, there are much more TK's (mostly accidental) The Q button is NNNB to avoid fratricide.
Moved then to another jungle map (US vs China) and again got owned however started to cop the differences in BF2 and PRMM gameplay. Pretty fast you learn to stop, look and listen before moving. There's also no point in moving on your own....wait for your squad to form up and move as a group. Never stand up unless sprinting to cover, stay prone or crouched. Spawn as a medic, with the potential to have a reload time of up to a minute there's no point using another kit. Yes I know I'll get flamed but it is what I learned one medic in a squad is way too few, with 2 specialist kits the rest should be medics. This is the drawback of the 30-1 min respawn. Its so easy to get killed and takes so long to come back you've got to do everything to avoid it.
On the respawn time, I think for the reasons above that there'd be a better balance if it was maxed out at 40-45 seconds, a minute is excessive and I found that in the final 3rd of a game people were leaving the servers i was on as they were taking too long to respawn. It also leads to a lack of continuity vs the start of a round as a few people die attacks effectively end...this leads to people just camping in high buildings etc taking pot shots at each other (not sure if this was intended).
Also means that as rounds go on squad leaders become less important...as squad members die and take so long to come back the liklihood is that the SL will be killed by enemy fire, also means as a SL you're hiding for minutes at a time to provide a mobile spawn point. It may be an idea to give squad members a 20% reduction in respawn times as a bonus for being in a squad and haveing the SL set as their respawn point.
Other than the longer respawns this game rules...you will find yourself moving from cover to cover, popping smoke to cover your retreat or assault a position, covering teammates as the move accross streets etc.
I didn't get a chance to try vehicles for very long, but when in a tank or armoured vehicle do not try cap flags, AT is much more powerful now, stay at a distance and cover assaults, shell advancing troops etc, but ensure you stay in the open with room to manouvere.
Will post more this one is rambling a bit.
