I'm going to be getting a new mobo and processor for Christmas and i have read that xp can get messed up if I don't do it right. so, I wanted to create a system restore CD but I don't have a program to do it. Are there any good free ones?

if you get a new CPU & motherboard you will have to do a fresh install of XP, so all the new drivers wont get conflicted with the old ones, theres no easy way out of it.

Does that mean that if the comp came with windows you would have to buy another xp disc. I am doing the same thing i have got a non genuine copy of windows could i use my code to register it. Sorry for the hijack.

Scinco is right you will have to reinstall XP and yer pix ya shouldnt really tell everyone that u have a non-gen copy of XP, go out n buy it apprantly you can legaly put it into up to 5 of your own computers

yes, ive tried it in the past sometimes it doesnt always work so i find it easier to do a complete rebuild (format, fresh install etc)

and to pix you should go buy XP from a shop, its not overly expensive

I'm going to try what the microsoft site said but if it doesnt work, I have an xp cd but its only the upgrade so I might be screwed. Any ideas?

you will if you dont have a previous Full version of Windows,

did you get a recovery disc with your PC, usually that is specific to only your computer and would have a full version of XP Home or Pro

it didnt come with a recovery disc, i had to make some but then they didnt work so I had to reinstall windows and luckily i somehow upgraded it.


I have a windows 98 disc though, could I install that and then upgrade to xp?

Do an in-place upgrade of XP, then when it says "setup will restart" for the first time, just shut off the PC and swap the mobo. The only thing you really want is the redetection of hardware, you can use sysprep /reseal for this too and it's much better than a repair install/upgrade.

when do i shut off the pc? Like as it is shutting down?

It'll say "Setup will now restart your computer and continue after. Please remove any floppy disks from their drives.", or something to that effect, and there will be a 15 second delay and a red progress bar to show it (it's not doing anything in these 15 seconds, just giving you time), and as soon as you see the red bar, you can turn off the PC, and swap the motherboards. Then you can simply restart (make 100% sure you have EVERYTHING plugged in properly, double and triple check, the amount of grief I got from the bloody CPU heatsink, you don't want to know), and windows will finish off the setup process, which should take about 20mins. The most important bit of this is simply redetecting the hardware.


But like I said, don't bother. Just go to the Microsoft site, download the Deploy tools from there (http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...isplaylang=en), then extract the CAB file to wherever with WinRAR, and finally, run Sysprep.exe with the "mini setup", "Detect non-plug and play devices" and "reseal" boxes ticked. Then it'll shut down the PC, and you can swap the mobo, and finally, restart and get a fresh XP install without losing all your updates and hotfixes and settings.

On the other hand, a repair installation / in-place upgrade might just iron out some annoying & persistent XP bugs you've been having.
