    SF separated from BF2

I just installed the retail/CD version of Special Forces. Actually, I found I had to uninstall & reinstall BF2 followed by SF followed by patch 1.41. Unfortunately, I also find that the SF maps don't show up when playing BF2 and that in order to play the SF maps I have to start the SF game separately. Doing this the BF2 maps don't show up in the SF game panel. Why is this? Armoured Fury works just fine without all this hassle. How do I correct this?

Because it's an expansion pack and not a booster pack...why they did this is beyond me.

Expansion = expands off original game
booster = boosts current game with additional content ie maps, vehicles etc

And honestly comparing sf to vanilla expansion and booster sound exactly the same lol.

Oh, I didn't catch that subtlety. Well how does one skip from SF to BF2 while playing online maps? Is it even possible to have SF and BF2 maps in a server rotation?

In theory it could be done; the clients and server would have to copy all the vanilla maps (or at least the info folders) into the mods\xpack\levels folder. I don't know if it would work on a ranked server though and I don't know of any servers actually running like that.

you can't run sf maps alongside vanilla/af/ef maps automatically in a server. you can manually change to a diff map, and it will force the client to restart automatically, so it's minimal impact to clients, but in the end it's just kinda a big mess. so servers run one or the other.

sf uses a modified engine/physics for the grappling hooks and zip line abilities. also the night vision is a huge addition too. this is why the two don't mix.

my theory is, i believe the mindset was to do "expansion packs" all along, but then they saw how SF kind of divided their community and they fell back onto simpler/integrated "booster packs". then they ran out of memory and couldn't fit any more in as far as weapons. lol. kinda silly.

i do wish they'd at least come out with more maps. weapons/armies/vehicles aside, if they just had different game play maps, that'd spruce things up a lot too!

OK, just tested it. Vanilla maps run just fine in SF. There is no technical reason it can't be done. The only issues are that it might not be able to be ranked and that clients will have to copy their map info folders manually before joining the server. Obviously, you won't have the zipline/grapple/RPG since the armies that have those weapons are not on the vanilla maps.

you can join sf servers in vanilla and vanilla in sf.
just make sure in the server browser make sure that the *this mod only* box is unchecked.
when you click on the server and closes bf2 and instantly starts sf.
