I highly recommend Forgotten Hope 2. It is not released yet but you can play the version for BF42 and see why I say so. The devs haven't given a release date yet but I am hopeful for one before the end of February.
Battlegroup-Frontlines is the other major WW2 mod: http://www.bgfmod.com/ .
Largely based on the Battlegroup 42 mod for Battlefield 1942. (BG2 team merged with Frontlines and Warfront mod teams early this year.) I don't know of any other WW2 mods for BF2.
So when you say "play the version for BF1942", do you have to have BF1942 or can you play the MOD with BF2?
Thanx
You need BF1942 to play the original Forgotten Hope. That would give you some idea what to expect when FH2 is eventually released. And, of course, if you're interested in WW2 mods then BF1942 might be worth getting anyway; it should be available pretty cheap now. The main differences from BF2 are that BF1942 didn't have the squad system or an official points/ranks system. You can also try out Battlegroup 42 then (http://www.battlegroup42.de/).
