The IEDs made from 90-120mm arty rounds do quite a bit of damage, but that's freaking ARTY ROUNDS! Almost every Abrahms that WAS disabled, the crew made it out alive. Depleted uranium armor is quite tough. It takes DU rounds to really pierce it. Not many Iraqis had kinetic DU rounds in stock when we rolled up in there...

Sorry to argue here...but the shape charges they are using now will blow through an up-armored HMMVV and crush it from the inside...and pierce a M1 easily killing the driver if nothing else because he cant get out...believe me Im only 3 weeks back from Iraq...stationed just outside Sauder City...I saw it with my own 2 eyes

I am not saying your wrong, but I have been researching losses of M1 tanks, & their crewman for about 30 minutes, & so far I can find no record of an M1 Abrams tank ever in history being destroyed, or any crewman killed by an AT rocket

There was only 1 KIA in the first gulf war of an M1 tank crewman (& that was friendly fire), & I am trying to find any evidence that the crew compartment of an M1 has ever been penetrated by an AT rocket killing a crewman in the 2nd gulf war

      I am still looking

OH! To a AT rocket...i.e. RPG...hell no..they bounce right off! However, they have shape charges about the size of a coffee can that will blow right through

          Shaped charges shot by what?

Are you saying they are just walking up & placing them on the tank like a "sticky bomb" in the movie "Saving Pvt. Ryan"

No they are a form of IED....but when they blow...the end facing the vehicle forms a point, and goes straight through...theyre horrible

Also you cannot get the one shot kill on the T90 or the PLA tank. Only the Abrams has the right sloping of armor to do it on level ground. I've gotten it at long range several times, owning the M1A2 tank whores on Warlord. I just love the warm feeling inside that you get when you one shot kill them just as they appear from the fog...They're like, WTF, I HAD FULL HEALTH JUMINTIGER IS T3H HAXX0R5!111

OK, you are refering to EID's, "you threw us off" when you said "weapon", sure large EID's can disable an M1, but the M1's "crew survivablity" is proven

May be you over stated your case just a lil' bit lol

Isn't it IED for improvise explosive device? Since most of what the insurgents us is only rocket shells, mortar rounds and things of that nature to make the IED's they place in the roadways and everywhere else Allied vehicles/armor go?

I've seen pictures of Abrams destroyed. Double stacked WW2 AT mines IIRC. One's not enough, but when stacked, they blow a hole through from the bottom.

EDIT: Forgot to mention, that's IRL of course.

                          Yup...they place them like so

                          __ <-upside down AT mine
                          ==<-small amount of dirt
__<- Right side up AT mire

when the tanks drive over them, they set eace other off

There is quite a number of Abrams destroyed by various means, the number of totalled tanks is probably about 20+, with a lot more being sent back to the US.
Crew survivability on the Abrams is pretty good, but there have been cases of RPG penetrations, and most notably IEDs that lead to the killing of crewmen.

                            A sad example:
Miller died in Ar Ramadi, Iraq, when his unit came under enemy attack and a rocket-propelled grenade struck his M1A1 Abrams tank. He was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 72nd Armor Regiment, 2nd Infantry Division, Camp Casey, Korea. Died on November 10, 2004.
Profile page of Army Pfc. Dennis J. Miller, Jr., who died in Operation Iraqi Freedom, including photos and visitor-submitted messages.

                            A total loss:
Abrams hit into the glacis by an RPG fired from highway overpass on April, 10th 2004. Resulted in fire of front fuel cell, tank completely burned out, no crew injuries.

The Abrams is a good tank, but it is not "invulnerable". Especially hull sides and rear grill are rather vulnerable. Looking at the proposed TUSK upgrade, the Army is very aware of this. So please people stop all this "UBER Abrams" Tom Clancy ******** the whole internet is infested with.

It is still one of the safest places to be on a battlefield. A vast majority of tank crewman survive even when the vehicle is disabled. No one said it was "invunerable." We said it's the next best thing when it comes to survivability.

Your 1st example is an "unofficial" website that CLAIMS a crewman was killed by an RPG

You 2nd example says the entire crew survived

I will say it loudly for the ppl in the cheap seats

THERE IS NO OFFICIAL RECORD OF A RPG EVER IN HISTORY CAUSING DEATH TO A US SERVICEMAN IN AN M1 ABRAMS TANK

RPG's have been known to penetrate into the ammunition compartment, & the engine compartment, but never into the crew compartment

RPG's are simply to "light" to penentrate the crew compartment of an US M1 tank

The only weapons that I have found in my research to have penetrated the crew compartment of an US M1 tank is the T-72's 125MM tungstun core sabot round, our own 120MM Depleted Uranium dart (friendly fire), Hellfire missiles from a US APACHE attack helicoptor (friendly fire), & EID's

If I am wrong provide a link to a news service like MSNBC that has reported a fatality to a US Serviceman being fatally wounded in an M1 tank

A US tank crewman is more in danger of casualty by being mistaken for the enemy, & falling victim to a friendly fire incident than any weapon our enemies field today

Edit: I read that 5 soldiers died when a RPG hit a tank that they were riding on the top off, it did not penentrate the crew compartment when Dennis J. Miller died

BOTTOM LINE: A US Serviceman in a tank, or not, is still safer in Iraq than if he were walking down the street @ night in New York City, or driving in traffic in any US city

                                I call that "UBER"

Son learn the difference between "destroyed", & "disabled", you can blow a track off an MI w/ an RPG, or start a fire in the engine comartment, or ammo storage in the rear where it is designed to safely vent away from the crew compartment disabeling the tank, & causing it to need repair, but ti takes a lil' more than that to destroy an M1, or kill it's crew

The have a "term" for what "light" damage weapons like the RPG are capapble of inflicting on an M1, it is called a "mobility kill", but the crew always survives

                                Lieutenant General |SI|SERIALBUTCHER
