BF2 crashes upon loading - SF Expansion works

When trying to launch the BF2 game, the loading screen will stay up for an extended period of time. Then it comes up with an error which stats it needs to close bf2.exe.

When I launch the Special Forces expansion, however, it starts up and loads just fine.

If I got into Special Forces and try to enter a BF2 server (where it automatically closes Special Forces and opens BF2) I get the same error.

Any ideas?

Tried reinstalling the latest patch. I used the full version instead of the incremental patches. Although it installed successfully, that did not solve the problem.

Any other ideas?

I also have the C:\DOCUME~1\BLAINE~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\e8f0_appcompat. txt file if anybody wants to look at it. EA Won't be back until Monday, so that's what I'll ask :)

Latest Drivers installed Latest
OS Windows XP
Anti-Virus/firewall Norton / WinXP Firewall
Internet connection DSL (1200 kbps down)

Started BF2 up after a few months of non-play.

Strange, ran some anti adware, disk cleanup, defrag, new video drivers (I was at 6.9, ATI has 9.11 since November 15th) and BF2 works now.....odd, but hey, no worries.....thanks!
