What's wrong with playing for points, as long as you're still have fun while doing so?

Just because I bought BF2, doesn't mean I am obliged to download and play mod's, you have to remember that. I would guess most of this player base only play casually, don't even visit any of the community sites, and don't know, or care about mod's.

I'm a fan of stats, I only play these games for a kick and stats make me feel as if I'm doing something that is, at least in some small way, productive rather than completely wasting my time :P

As you say the vast majority of the playerbase never even touches a mod and, because our advertising doesn't really reach those casual gamers that's predictable, the people who are actually judging our mods are you guys who know about them but decide not to play them, that's the interesting bit to me :P

i think its that once you start playing vanilla you get used to everything and become "1337" and its generaly more fun when its easier (by easier i mean that youve gotten used to it) but when you go to a mod there are usually many things to learn and it gets hard. Just a guess for the majority of players, stats are also probably a big deal as many people are stat whores.

Stats have a big problem with it like people that were in the top 10 have either left BF2 or moved on to 2142 cause there is barrley any actvie in the top 10 like the f1 guy just moved up to 1st :)

Shame more people won't a) download it or b) stick with it and reject the stats and points farce
100% agree, love PR to death, I also enjoy POE. I have only just downloaded both and found the servers empty except for maybe one with 15-20 people. So I have 2 choices singleplayer or back to vBF.... I choose PR singleplayer..

Points, points, points. Thats why that dont come when you build it. The players that dont care about points, that do care about teamwork and realism, and the players that detest TKers and retarded kids ruining their fun are the ones who move over to Mods.... the mod community quickly weed out the idiots.

Maybe one idea is to break up the initial download. Before I upgraded my internet speed it was going to take 10+ hours to download POE2 on 256k.
Break it up into easier download sizes...???

Keep up the great work though, there are alot of people like myself that REALLY appreciate the hard work and effort you guys put in for us.

$kelet0r if you ever want to play PR with me and a mate...your always welcome, ya got great taste in games. Keep an eye out for me in-game...

I have to disagree here, this is a myth, that more mature/sensible players choose to play realisitic/teamwork focused mod's. There is just as many smacktards who play mod's, as those who play BF2.

It made me laugh when people were arguing about 2142. One group said "Fine, play 2142, they'll be less smacktards/noobs/griefers in BF2 then." The other lot saying the opposite, "Stay playing BF2 then, less noobs in 2142!" Now, I've played both, and there is an equal amount of idiots in either!!

I do care about teamwork. Playing mostly engineer, I get very little reward for running around repairing people. But I like to see my points go up, however slow. Like Melugo said, it is a small feeling of accomplishment.

EA and DICE have a lot to answer for. They knew full well that the stat's system would hinder mod's, and by putting ranks at very high scores, most players won't ever achieve the highest ranks. Also, releasing booster packs, and a futuristic sequel, kept mod' news out of the spotlight, and giving modders less material to play with.

Now Valve on the other hand...

                    Re: Vanilla over Mods

I don't think mods "came out too late" or anything .. actually, I think the most succesful mods get the most playtime when the core game has been played out and interest is waning - if million people has the game sitting on their shelves, and are bored of it, it's easy to get the audience if you offer them something new for free.

problem with PoE is though, that it's just too similar to BF2. I just don't see the point of playing it over vanilla, which has more servers and better players, and it's not overplayed for most yet. Also (this is just my personal opinion) gameplay in BF2 is generally bit better, more polished and streamlined (though most of it is because I'm so used to it). And the maps in PoE are pretty bad.

Now, I like mods. I really do, I don't care if they're 5 gigs to download, hard to install and whatnot.. but I don't want to play a mod that's just the core game in different wrapping - mods that are something completely different draw me in, and are generally the most succesful ones.

                      Re: Vanilla over Mods

POE2 isnt too similar to BF2. It just isnt too different. Its infantry combat is one of the best Ive ever seen, even better than in Americas Army, but just isnt close enough to SWAT4 which naturally is a cookie of another kind. POE2 is incredible, fantastic, amazing and awesome, and Im the guy who had never faith in any mod in any game.

Where POE2 failed the reasons are where people were disappointed in BF2. If POE2 would have managed to take the tools from BF2 that werent published, it would have been another game. Laser designators, kits that would actually and really represent their class.

For the classes, the failure of Spec Ops is the biggest one. C4 isnt really what should make Spec Ops special, and the bino/comm combo either. Classes should have been a lot more specialized. Close quarters combat, all-around combat and long range combat. With tools to use to excel at each characteristic. I dont know how to exactly describe it, but starting from kits, the game didnt offer that much of difference. It should have been a massive step forward, but it was a massive sidestep.

Having said all that, POE2 remains to be my second favourite PC game ever made. Miles better than any currently released BF2 mod.

Its like a great tasting cake, with no surprise in it however.

I guess I'll chime. I feel your pain because oftentimes my game of choice has no occupied servers. I play Project Reality exclusively now. After playing PR, anything with crosshairs is uncivilized. Pop 2-3 into an enemy and he aint running no more. Cant say the same for any other BF game. It's rediculous what people can survive in other games. I know, go for the headshot. Bad arguement there. You shouldn't be able to take 5 bullets to the abdomen and not skip a beat...

About POE, my roommate plays that exclusivly. I used to. Thing about it for me is this. I don't really care about playing the Ukraine or Germany in a fictitious world. Also, the maps. Huge fields and such. Not too into that. Don't get me wrong though. What you guys have done is amazing. Just being honest with the things that keep me from playing... Also, I get a slight graphical lag but the shotgun power makes up for it...

Well I don't think the numbers have ever gone down. I just think at release there is a hype and people who play them for about 2 weeks. Another thing most players don't think about are patches. Most ranked servers are Windows while a lot of unranked mod servers are Linux. The Linux 1.41 patch isn't out for US servers yet which sucks for a lot of mod servers. It's complete ******** because it's been released in Europe. Plus the fact they failed to advertise the patch and it's confusing for some players. There are still a lot of POE servers that haven't patched up almost 200 or so looking at the server list. Still a lot of unpatched players also.

Theres a reason why the DC mod wooped so much butt, and his name is Frank D.

There isn't a second version of him, at least not yet. But of course you already know that Troybob, most here don't.

The average age of the players between DC and BF2\BF2142 I would guess is pretty big. Most of the serious more mature players disappeared a while ago, you cant argue that. Their the same people that never cared about the Ranks and medals (except till they got the unlocks).

All of this is why I don't play BF2 anymore, haven't in a while. I will be playing "Frontlines War" when its released of course. So will most of the people who thought BF2 would be DC part 2. I also wont ever mod for an EA\DICE game again (at least not is the status quo is kept).

I have not and will not buy 2142, neither will most of the people I miss playing DC with. Not trying to sound snobby, but not bf2 or any of its current mods have ever produced a serious round of games that can compare to the peak DC days. Now I know I am getting old man syndrome, virtually.

You sir are a genius!! Theres a reason why that happened. Its called EU, SF, and the other one I didn't buy. So many people who talked smack about EA big brother thing ran out and grabbed every "Stab the mods in the back" Booster pack they could.:shakehead

Enjoy 2142 kids, and please don't follow us to Frontlines.

                                Re: Vanilla over Mods

I honestly gave POE2 a try, but as someone already posted. I made friends and connections and it was tough to get them to transition over to POE2.

Another reason I stopped with POE2 is the weapons, i didnt like the selection. with vanilla i have the option to choose from the standard kit or the unlocks, POE2 didnt provide that, you use what they give you.
POE2 should of made some type of armory at each flag station or something where each player could change out their kits. with weapons of other nationalities.
another thing for me was massively over powered vehicles.
the lack of fast moving vehicles (DVP and the FAV type cars).
the open area maps that had little to no cover.

thats all i can think of right now. these things might have been fixed in a patch that was released but it was too late for me. these things that made the game play not fun for me, already sealed the deal.
