To the helicopter jockeys out there

Explain why you think the Battlefield 2 helicopter physics are unrealistic and how you think the physics represented in Vietnam/DC were more realistic.
I'm curious how many actually understand the aviation principles rather than simply making guesses as to how it should be rather than the reality of the issue.
To my mind there is only one major issue and that is the lack of mass affecting the forces of lift and pitch when altering the collective input but I am interested in the general (informed or otherwise) opinions

Wind effects, any of you ever flown a real chopper (size of the Cobra or Z-10)? Well, you have to be constantly adjusting for wind, and skimming the ocean is impossible... Then, doing flips. In a real chopper you will lose 40-70% of your control and although it can be done, flipping all the way over (ex. Holding down the down arror key) is a hell of a lot more of a challenge and risk. A few other things, but they can not be expected to be fixed in an FPS.

    Cheers

Ive had a few hours in a real, professional, training purpose helicopter simulation device. Complete with all the gadgets, buttons and a lot of screens. They even said I flew better than the ones who were about to graduate, go figure.

Anyway, just like jets in BF2, helicopters are not affected by impulse and mass. The impression the control leaves, is totally different.

You can look up Lock-On or Lomac (not sure) helicopter simulation videos on vide.google.com or youtube and check for yourself, how much the visual impression differs.

You know what else I find silly? The fact that your rotors have no disturbance on the surroundings. If you try to cut in on a path someone just went through your gonna get blown around a bit. Rotors cut the air up a ton!

Never flown a helo IRL nor am i qualfied to make comparisons on the two worlds. But one thing in the game I do know is complete BS is people doing barrel rolls in transport and attack helos.

            my lay-man's sentiments exactly
which is why I am always horrified when people mention Vietnams or Desert Combats helicopters as realistic or more so than BF2. For all the limitations of the physics engine (no air density, no gravity, no mass effect), it at least has the instability and response rate that a heavy aircraft would have
whereas helicopters in Vietnam/DC performed more like spaceships than rotary vtol aircraft
            Why does that perception exist?

Simple, pure answer for you $keletor: People like whining, it is a favorite pass time of many people on this forums... luckily BF2 is a perfect outlet for their issues. Hence we listen to infinite complaints.....

It's a game so I could honestly care less. I am an aviation student though.

                  .

I would think that this experience would help me should I wish to learn how to fly one, though. Am I wrong?

that's not the point of this discussion though
if people (like Chodda) would care to elaborate on the fundamental flaws in the BF2 helicopter flight physics I'd love to hear their opinions

When have you seen a game that was realistic in every aspect?

Games and real life are completely different. There’s absolutely nothing in this game I would ever take and apply to real life. Maybe besides learning pitch and yaw and learning the flight controls... that’s about it.

That's what I meant. After some light reading and playing, I understand the controls... the rest, naturally, needs to be (re)learned.

Why do the vehicles have to be so complicated in this game? My goodness it's not a flight sim.
