Yes, its the Suhoi. The F35 is technically an attack/strike aircraft. Hence, its primary role is close support and the air-to-air is secondary.
By comparisons, the J-10 has more of an Air-air role.
In terms of aquisition, the both occupy the same niche, which is the cheaper, lighter complement to their heavier service counterpart. In the case of the F-35, that would be a F-18E (or future replacement). In the case of the J-10, it would be the J-11.
The difference in focus in role comes from the immediate doctinal and strategic needs.
The Chinese need only to achieve air supremacy in order for their better equipped and more numerous ground troops to dominate the ROC ground forces. The USMC, by comparisons, has to bring all its firepower across the oceans.
