I like PR mod well enough, but if I were going to make a realisitc infantry mod, I'd include the following:
- more realistic ballistics, i.e. pronounced bullet drop, accurately modeled projectile speeds
- No crosshairs, aim by sights only (revamp sights to be better)
- Realistic damage (torso hits from rifles are fatal 1-2 shots, wounds to the extremities affect accuacy and movement, so if you got hit in the knee with a .308 you'd basically be dragging yourself on the ground, if you got hit in the shoulder, you would have a hard time holding your gun steady)
- Medics can only heal minor damage and fleshwounds, and cannot magically bring someone back to life who just took half a magazine in the chest or a sniper round in the noodle.
And one thing I think would help BF2 out a lot is SOUND! The effects on BF2 are crap, even with full 64-bit hardware accelration. You should be to detect an enemies position MUCH better by hearing their fire. I get tired of being shot from only 150 m and only being able to hear the bullets hit, not where they're being shot from. You should also be able to hear soldiers running from further away, out to 100 feet. Plus, the weapons sound like pellet rifles. Actually, I think pellete rifles are louder. Guns don't go "pop plik pap pop"... they go "P'BLAMeeffwhh!!!!", really freakin loud. Maybe not the lighter rifles as much, but the G3, support weapons, and AKs should DEFINETELY be much, much louder, and have more detailed sound. Even realistic Real-World combat is intense, the noise and spectre of a tactical shootout is a scary experience. BF2 is practically an arcade-style shooter with an attempt to bring battlefield tactics, yet it just seems unimpressive from a battle-atmosphere standpoint.
Also, more sprites would be good. More muzzle blast, more dust and debris when bullets hit. Better explosions. Maybe blood?
What else would you include in a mod to make it play better? I don't know what the game engine is capable of, but I think EA could have done a few things better to make the game much more immersive. As it stands, when I play BF2, I feel like I'm "driving" a soldier in a video game, not immersed in combat.
