Crash to desktop when starting the game...help !

Hi,

I just reinstalled Windows from a backup and I can't start BF2 anymore. I tried reinstalling it (many times), without applying any patch or expansion, and BF2 v1.0 (the basic version of the game) does the following:

When started, screen goes black as usual, changes to different hues of black a couple of times, then returns to desktop. It exits BF2 completely without any error message.

I haven't removed any of the intro videos (just in case you're wondering), and between each reinstall, I have tried (to my best) of removing any mention of "BF2" in the registry (however I dont know about the right way of cleaning the registry correctly of any BF2 trace).

My rig:

- Windows XP PRO SP1
- AMD Athlon XP 2800+
- Motherboard MSI KT4V
- Memory: 1 Gig (PC 3200)
- Video Card: Radeon 9800 PRO 128 megs,
running Catalyst 6.5 drivers (I have also tried the 5.8 and 5.9 drivers)

Also, my monitor is set at 60hz.
My game has always been working with this hardware and all the rest.

Any idea what might be causing such startup problem ?

Yes, I do. Not sure what it has to do with anything, but yes. Been using an LCD for the last 6 months.
