I find that I'm actually better than I thought I was.
On my server filters, I usually only have the 64 player or large maps selected, and that's been my experience in BF2.
The problem, as I have discovered, is since the amount of players is larger, the amount of bullets and grenades is larger, and therefore I die a lot more.
I also lose alot in what seemed to be 1 vs 1 fights, but in fact there was probably another player contributing to the damage on me.
On a 32 - 40 man server, I don't have that problem. The players are thinned out enough that it seems I have more room to do tactics, and when faced with a 1 vs 1 situation, I'll win most of the time. Or when defending a flag against a group of 3-5 enemies, I'll probably be able to fend them off as well, since it's more likely I won't be shot in the back of the head while doing so.
It works for other maps as well. On a 64 man server, I might be trying to take down a chopper as AT, but some meddler on the ground will always shoot me in the back of the head as I'm looking skyward. On a server with less players, however, it's AT vs Chopper, or AT vs tank and the fight is much more intense.
I play a lot of servers, and 64 men are my favorite. But having room to actually manouver, and use tactics in a squad in a smaller server can actually be rewarding, as there seems to be much longer firefights and engagements that would otherwise be ended early by having a hail of nades finish it.
