Terrible performance, need help

As the title says, I'm having problems getting bf2 running with decent performance/graphical settings.

Before upgrading i got something like 40 fps minimum on these specs:

pentium 4 3.0e ghz (dont ask... got suckered)
1.5gb ram (2x512/2x256)
intel 875pbz
agp 6800 gs unlocked to 16 pipelines and 6 vertex shaders (original 12/5)

afterwards, im getting something like 27 fps minimum and 30 fps sustained while flying or moving inside of cities on these specs, system will peak 80+ fps if im just looking at water or something mundane like that:

Opteron 165 @ 2.7ghz
same ram, ran it @ default and at 245mhz, no change at all
dfi nf4 Ultra-D
x1900xt

In the catalyst control center, everything is set to application controlled except for vsync which is forced off.

From every single benchmark of the x1900 series cards, ive seen people reporting minimum frames in the 50s.

All settings in bf2 are identical between my new and old systems. All settings were at medium except geometry (high), dynamic light (off), dynamic shadows (low). 1280x1024 @ 75mhz.

Ive tried clearing the cache, reinstalling drivers, verified video card clock speeds, reinstalled video card drivers, disabled/reenabled the page file, set audio from high - hardware to medium - software.

No dice. :ar15: :wall:

The only thing i havent tried yet (going to after responses here) is reinstall bf2.

other than that, i am at a loss and could really use some help.

PS. Problems are reproducible in day of defeat: source (a whopping 30fps?!)

wow, a whole 25 fps at minimum settings on an x1900xt

Err...you did reinstall windows when you changed MOBO's?

I have a major tip for ye that should boost preformance.
start:control panel:see basic information about computer: click on "Advanced tab": click on preformance settings: Adjust for best Preformance: under the visual effects tab.

yeah did u do a full reinstall of windows or just swap harddisks

if u did just swap, i recommend doing a reinstall of windows

and also, make sure when u put in ur new video card, u uninstalled the old nvidia drivers and used drivercleaner pro

oh btw, the ram runs you down alot.
replace the 256 to 1 512.

@ megawhompertoo its hard to migrate two raid 0 raptors from an intel mobo to an nvidia motherboard and keep the array , yes reformatted.

@ ConscriptVirus ill outline the old system specs and new system specs, somehow since ive reinstalled everything except for battlefield 2, day of defeat: source, and the motherboard drivers, i think its the motherboard drivers :hmm:

@ Nadokings Switching everything to performance wouldnt have the effect of adding 50 or so fps that im short on, anyway most of everything in there is set towards performance settings... And ya, 2x256 dimms in dual channel is far superior to a single 512mb dimm, id still have to run a 2t cmd rate but id be in single channel for 1.5gbs of ram instead of dual channel.

Old system specs:

p4 3.0e @ 3.12 on water cooling
AGP 6800gs unlocked to 16 pipes / 6 vertex shaders and overclocked to around ultra
2x512mb of g.skill 1gbfc ram
2x256mb of pqi pc4400 ram
2x74gb raptor raid 0 hdds

opteron 165 ccbbe 0616 @ 2.7ghz on water
PCIe x1900xt
afore mentioned memory, all stable at 245mhz
afore mentioned hard drives, striping of 64kb instead of the intel sata controllers standard settings of 4kb... (Perhaps a performance hit for bf2??)
afore mentioned sound card.

Ive reset my painfully perfected overclock to default and promptly dropped another few frames. Also, while testing 3dmark06 @ 1280x1024, system gets 4800+ points when the processor is overclocked, backed the overclock down to defaults and its down to 4500 points, isnt that a bit low for an x1900?

At the lowest settings, fps in bf2 on karkand drops to the mid 20s, medium settings it drops to roughly identical minimum frames, and on high settings it drops into the high teens.

It doesnt seem as though the system is limited by the video card because there is virtually no drop in going from low to medium, and only a 10 fps drop from medium to high (granted its all below 30 anyway for minimum frames).






To put this out there, this is off a clean reformat and the game has yet to run right on this new system build. Anything else that I can try before just reformatting..? :hmm:

your making things more complicating then they need to be.
First off, it may not increase FPS, but it does lower file swapping and your ms will be lowered.
On a system with many sticks of ram, this will allow the ram to focus on less things making them faster.

just reformatted, clean installation of everything and this card still cant produce 50 fps stable at any graphical settings.

Is this particular card damaged perhaps?

I need an answer asap if possible, warranty from the ebay seller is running out soon and this system runs like a dog (minimum 38fps in bf2 with everything medium except dynamic stuff set to off and aa/af 6x/high)

Going to try out day of defeat source soon (should be maxed fps, at least thats what others are reporting).

Try the card in somebody elses pc and see how it is. If still crap performance i would send it back.

We'll if it was ESD, the card wouldnt be even be able to display right.
What kind of mobo do you have?

i dont get it

common motherboard, with a common processor, with a common video card should result in no compatibility problems or performance problems.

if it is drivers or software, wouldnt it first off be fixed after a reformat, second be more known?

also, as a question to anyone out there with an amd platform and an x1900xt or better, what settings are you running at bf2 and what are the minimum fps you get in the worst areas... im interested to see just how off this system is.

Im stooting in the dark here, but is your power supply enough? I had a friend with the SAME problem and he had to get a more powerful supply unit.

somehow im thinking something might be damaged, but if that were the case, as nado said, the card would artifact like hell...

may want to reflash the vcards bios..?

Can't think of what might be wrong. Have you updated to DX9.0c following reinstall?

yea, reinstalled it etc etc.

something someone on a different forum suggested was disabling my sb audigy 2zs

lo and behold the game runs max settings @ 1280x1024 75hz
minimum frames in sharqi are 28fps

usually idles 35-55 in the cities and 60-80 outside city/over open land/water etc etc.

still getting that bad minimum fps of 28-35 for a while in certain areas, somehow i doubt the card should be running that slow..
