WTF? Inspiron 6000 RAM upgrade gone bad?

So I bought a stick of 512MB DDR2-4200 which is the specified upgrade for my notebook model. I take out one of the 256MB chips and replace it with the new 512MB. Everything goes together fine. Screw the bottom plate back on and attempt to boot up. Computer starts to spool and shuts down after 5 seconds. Monitor doesn't even come on. So I think crap, I screwed it up. I take out the new memory chip and replace it with the old 256MB and screw everything back together. Still won't boot up and powers down after 5 seconds. I attempted this 4 different ways last night rearranging the chips and trying to get it to work. Nothing.

Please help me with any ideas. Thanks.

Can you go to the dell website and see if they have a guide on replacing ram? Maybe theres a special way to put it in.

Edit- I found this but I don't know if it will help because its not specific to your laptop. But see if it helps
