You do not have to open any ports to play BF2...



EA Support gives that response when they dont know whats causing it.

I'm aware that for most cases you don't have to open any ports, but some routers require that you do so to solve issues.
In my case i'm having issues with random disconnects, this router is very annoying with ports, you simply can't use some applications without opening the ports on this router.

Nope.
I've always avoided wireless routers because of interference some households have.
Everything is connected through RJ-45.
The main problem is that Bellsouth only has these ADSL Modem/router combos apparently, which complicates things, they make firewall a requirement on some of these where you can't turn the hardware firewall off at all, without disabling the router side of the modem and using a seperate router to dial up using the modem.
Lucky for me this router has the feature of disabling the hardware firewall, unlike others i've had in the past.
But its still giving me port problems, even if i disable DHCP and use static IPs, theres just no way around it other than opening the ports you need basicly.
I wish it was as simple as one of those motorola cable modems where its main function is to just stay connected, no firewall or port forwarding of anykind because all its just a simple modem, just hookup a router or switch to it and you're good to go.

I'm also having serious disconnect problems. I've searched the forums and EA support but the problem remains. I don't think in my case its my router as I just bought a new rig and I never had problems like this on my old one. I've opened all of those ports too. The truth is, Ive only really been able to test my new system in single player because I rarely get enough game time online. NOTE: Same problem with the BF2142 demo.

Well, i'm happy to report that after a few days of playing BF2 with the ports open my problems have disapeared. :salute:
