  • Am I SOL with my laptop?

I have been looking for a game to play, and was pointed to this game, so I picked it up with the SO exp pack for $35.

My laptop is an Acer Aspire 5004WLMi, specs as follows:

    1 GB (DDR SDRAM)
100 GB Ultra ATA 100 Hard Drive
15.4 in. WXGA TFT Active Matrix
    Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition
AMD Turion 64 Mobile 1.8 GHz
    Bus Speed 1600 MHz
    RAM Speed 333 MHz
    Installed Cache Memory 1024 KB
    Graphic Processor SiS M760GX

When I try to play, the BF2 splash screen comes up, then goes black, then crashes back to the desktop. Is my video inadequate? Is there a way to get around this and play at a lower resolution? Everything else in my system is pretty up to snuff...

My desktop is an AMD Thoroughbred 1.7GHz (XP 2100+) on an Asus A7N8X Deluxe mobo w/ 768MB RAM, but my vid card is only a GeForce 2 MX400 that I put it in there back in '03, so the video card won't handle much more than surfing the net. I want to upgrade, but I want PCI-E, which means I have to buy a new motherboard, chip, and RAM too.

I'm installing the 1.4 patch right now, hopefully this might help.

    Thanks,
    Dave

Negative on the patch making it run.

Well, the video isn't I guess, the rest of it is though.

I'm not even going to bother trying it on my desktop video card, I'll just drop some money on a AGP card, probably either an X1600 Pro board or a 6800XT.

I wish there was something I could install to "mask" my video card, even to just run the game at lower settings.

It's not possible to install a better video card on laptops either, this sucks.

generally any laptop with integrated graphics is not good for games requiring demanding graphics.

Whelp, I picked up an ATI Radeon X1600 Pro at Circuit City for $199 - $45 rebate for $154 total. Had to pick up a new power supply too.

              Other options were eVGA 7600GS (256MB DDR2, 128-bit) for $139-$50 rebate = $90, or an eVGA 6600GT (128MB DDR3 128-bit) for $121-$70 = $51.

Think I made the right choice?

Re: Am I SOL with my laptop?

The EVGA 7600GS would have been the best idea. It would perform only a bit slower than the X1600 pro, but you would've saved $60

Re: Am I SOL with my laptop?

Ingrated graphics is the minimum of the minumum, its like being a private in the army, its sucks.
                  (that was cool )
so if u do buy a new laptop, make sure it has these in its mobo:
(i could be wrong for laptops)
                  PCI X16
                  AM2 CPU socket
                  gig of ram
than u can customize like no other

i'm no rocket scientist... but if there are pci-e 16 cards for laptops, i can imagine how much heat they generate. not to mention that some of these newer video cards are about as big as a laptop...

if you are looking to game, dont get a laptop!
