huge BF2 freezing issue?

hey, I've just purchased battlefield 2, but it just keeps on freezing at the screen where I pick between singleplayer and multiplayer. I've managed to get into singleplayer and play abit, but as soon as I pick multiplayer it just freezes, and I have to manually reboot the whole system. One time the screen went black, and my TFT was searching for a signal from the graphic card.

This is what I've done so far to resolve the problem;

Updated directx to october vers.
Tried nvidia driver on the DVD
Tried newest nvidia driver
Tried third nvidia driver.
Patched to 1.40 (No good in both versions, and the installations of 1.40 took over an hour each time, stuck at the 8 percent, object_client.zip in a loong time, before going through the rest - no problem with bf 2 installation)
Closed all background applications such as antivirus, and so on.
updated windows to service pack 2.
closed all firewalls etc.
Reinstall the game + patch 3 times.
Win XP hotfix installed.

My system specs is;

win xp sp2
+2400 @ 2,1 ghz
768 mb ddr pc3200
asus 6600gt

Really hope any of you can help, cause last resource is format: c.

So I formated my comp - installed newest nvidia driver (97.xx), and directx from the bf2 dvd, but the thing still jams up.. The bf music is playing, but I just cant load the multiplayer menu.. I played singleplayer for about 20 mins, ran smoothly, and tried loading the menu.. looked around, and as soons as I clicked on video settings, it jams up, didnt go very long

What is going on here?!

wat settings r u playing at?
for ur card, 1 gig of ram would be optimal and ur processor is kindof old

In the shortcut you launch the game from it will read +fullscreen 1, change it to read +fullscreen 0 then try clicking on MP just to check if a firewall window or something is popping up in the backround warning you of the dangers of the interweb.

Erh, I dunno if I hadnt explained myself precisely enough, but I cant play! And I know my ram etc isnt optimal, that isnt the issue.

Tried a crack too.. no difference..

Erh, I dunno if I hadnt explained myself precisely enough, but I cant play! And I know my ram etc isnt optimal, that isnt the issue.

Singleplayer only works with the std. map I pick at the single/multiplayer screen.. otherwise it looks like this, if I try and make a new singleplayer map, also if I try and go online;

ooo looks nasty,

is your graphics card overheating? i think you can see the temp in the nvidia control panel somewhere

it isnt.. its at 60 c max :|

from reading some google pages a 6600GT should idle at 40C,

out of curiosity have you cleaned out your case/parts recently, removing all the dust etc?

Hmmm, not recently no.. the 60c, is at full load.. but Ill try opening the cabinet and go through the basics.. see if its any good.

go into the bf2 options and disable EAX and set all settings to minimum :)

Update;

I've upgraded to an asus motherboard, and a 64 bit 3.0 ghz P4 HT, and a 400w psu - and it works completely now, already lance corporal Think it was the PSU that was ****ed

but thanks for the great help anyways guys :)
