Noob playing vanilla bf2 - servers?

I just got the game and have been trying to find out where all the ingame servers are? All I ever see are maybe 4-5 regardless of the time I log on. And yes, I have unchecked all the filter boxes except for the "Same Version" filter.

Why are there so few servers? Do I need to install a patch to have access to the majority of BF2 servers? And if so, what patches do I need and what order should I install them in?

Get the full 1.4 patch, install it, play.

Yes, you need the newest patch. 1.4

There are a ton of active BF2 servers, so just download the patch, and you should be set.

After you downloaded 1.4 full, check the box ranked, same version only, and same mod
