    A2A Missile Avoidance

I was playing Operation Clean Sweep (64) and ended up on the MEC; spawned at the airfield and took to the air in the MiG-29 and began my search for the opposing USMC aircraft. After shooting down the F-15 and F-18 a few times, a new enemy pilot takes to the Hornet. I sneak up and catch him from behind and as I release a couple missiles, he hits the flares and pulls straight up into the vertical (I of course proceed to follow); seeing both of my initial missiles failed to hit, I go for another lock on and fire off another 2 missles (knowing this time he won't have flares for defense), and again.. they both miss. At this point, I figure it's just his lucky day and break off to re-arm.

Later in the match, I again get on his 6, and this time, I lock-on, wait for the flares, and then spam like 4 missiles at him; again, he pitches straight up 90* and continues pulling and not a single one of my missles hits him. We repeat this scenario another 2-3 times at which point I realize I won't be able to defeat this guy with missiles (and the hell if using the cannon will be any more effective), and that his tactic of pulling straight up seems to be a reliable means of defeating my missile attacks. I test his own strategy against him by letting him get behind me and as soon as he fires his missiles, I flare, pull straight up and continue to pull, dodging each one of his missiles. The next round, having switched to the F-18, I ended up going 45-0 using this tactic.

Is this a proven method of avoiding missiles or just a fluke?

Does it work for all aircraft, or just the Hornet and Fulcrum?

    Tell me what you think..

I use that technique all the time. I was playing on Dalian last night as a matter of fact, and this J-10 whore kept getting behind me whilst I was in the F-35. Going to the fly by camera and pulling straight up in the air works 9/10 times...half the time I don't even waste my flares on them. I went 31-2 doing this technique and was always flying against a pretty good J-10 pilot. The best counter (if you're on the recieving end of this move) is when you see their nose pull straight up, bank left or right and do a complete circle. If they do a complete loop (which they will 99% of the time) you come out directly behind them. I usually don't even wait for my missle to lock before I volley about 3 of them. It also doesn't hurt to fire your missles while you're pulling up (from directly behind the other pilot) that way if they DO use this technique at least a couple of missle should be flying directly towards the cockpit.

    Just my $.02

yeah, it works with just about every plane. i try to fly into the sun and bank left or right where they are blindded.

you will nearly never hit an f18 when its pulling up, follow it upwards and shoot missiles when it comes down.

f18 is the ultimate missile dodger!

You cannot avoid missiles while in the F35 with any other plane behind you without using flares. EVER.

The only way to hit the (insert plane with ****ed up hitbox here) with missiles while it is going up is to LEAD them.

Yeah but on top of leading them you have to have somewhat of a decent angle on them and distance.

I mean, you CAN hit them when they are right in front of you, and turning hard...

But chances are if you get him out to your max lock range, make sure he doesn't have flares, and wait until he isn't circling... you will most likely kill him if you spam 4-5 missles.

The F-35 is the ultimate missile magnet. I hate that piece of crap. Myself and many others just bail out as soon as we get another plane on our 6. Not only is it a missile magnet, its missiles are blind. I can't tell you how many times I've been behind a Su-34 or MiG-29 with noob pilots only to have my missiles bounce off or suddenly move around the other jet right when they should impact.

Because it's so bad when you see someone owning it in you start to wonder if they have help or they know something most don't know. Example: The other night on Oman this guy was in the F-35 and I was in the Su-34. Most of the time when I'm in the Mec aircraft all I have to do is go into a tight circle and the F-35 can't hit me. I did this but this guy in the F-35 shot me down with two missiles. He did it again and again. I then started to wonder. The F-35 can't turn with either Mec aircraft. I wrote back to him (I'm an admin) saying I was going to take a punkbuster screenshot because he was shooting me down too easily. I was bluffing of course but he quit flying after that. lol

I don't know man, some guys just really are good with the F35. I'm often told that I'm very good, and accused of hacking, etc, etc, but I know where these remarks are coming from, and it's not from the guys that really are good!

Some people claim fly to the F35 at a about 90-95% throttle to improve it's turning and use 100% only when necessary. Many of missiles that I fire from the F35 miss as well, but I think you can improve your chances quite a bit with more experience, practice, better angles, timing, etc. As for avoiding missiles with the F35, again I'm no expert -- stay high and never fly in a straight line is about the best I can offer, but I've seen it done reasonably well by others.

Maybe the guy you were playing against was up to no good, but I think you'd be very surprised how effective some people can be with the F35 when you are up against the right person.

what might be worth a try is to fly 50-100 above this enemy jet, lock, wait for him to pull up, second u see his nose budge up, fire, as they might (i've never tried, but its logical) hit his cockpit as he goes right past them. Hence why i jerk the plane up then suddenly down, it'll take him a sec, and if my squad is at base, ill tell them to (if operation clean sweep) to man aa and get the f-15 airborne, he gets a welcoming comitee

                        Re: A2A Missile Avoidance

When I'm forced to take a jet (i.e; left back at base with every transport gone, except for jet in the hangar) - I fly the jet like a chopper... I use the terrain, buildings and obstacles to my advantage :P.

Flying low still dodges missiles like a dream. And since jets can't fly sideways or backwards- you only need to concentrate on whats in front- thus dodging obstacles is easier because your attention is focused there.

any plane you get in be it F-35, J-10, F-18, F-15, SU-27, MiG 29 I find the best method is to use Real-life tactics but apply a ace combet twist to them and you can avoid anyone bar the best of the best ace pilots and thanks for the pull up tactic I'll add it to my repertoire of barrel-rolls, split-S's and Immalman turns

The only way I've found to avoid the J10 on Wake Island is to get to 800 feet and full afterburner. It's an awfully annoying cat and mouse game which is unlike Tom and Jerry where the mouse always wins, but rather if you've got a J10 on your 6 o clock and no flares there is no evasive maneuver you can do to not die other than bailing. J10 on the other hand, does not even need flares because it's max turning radius is more than the A2A max missle turning radius.

I don't want to turn this into a "Nerf the J10!!!!111" thread but that seems like it would be really easy to fix.

Back on topic, it's strange that that maneuver can avoid missiles even in the F35. I'll have to try it this weekend when I have time to get back on BF2.
