I hate to say it but I had a similar experience and could not resolve it until I wiped the entire hard drive and re-installed everything from the operating system on down.....

Here's the abridged version:

1. Wiped hard drive (just to clean up and start over)
2. installed XP and all updates
3. installed BF2 (good)
4. installed the first patch (good)
5. installed an incremental (good)
6. installed an incremental (good)
7. installed the full 1.3 patch (crash to desktop every time)
8. un-installed BF2
9. re-installed BF2 (crashed to desktop every time with just vanilla installed)
10. un-installed BF2
11. searched the registry and deleted everything even remotely associated with BF2
12. re-installed BF2 (crashed to desktop every time with just vanilla installed)
13. repeated steps 10-12 again
14. wiped entire hard drive again
15. installed XP and all updates
16. installed BF2 (good again)
17. installed all patches using only the incremental versions through 1.3 (good)

When 1.4 came out I used the incremental version as well.

(and just FYI, I wouldn't do it again. I'd just move on to some other game...)
