use your tv-card to record in-game video!

    Has anyone ever tried it?

I gave it a shot last night and was really surprised. I get ZERO lag and it works great. I have to play around with the settings a bit because it gets kinda blurry when I move too fast. It looks almost like tunnel vision, its kinda cool looking actually.

The best thing about this is that you dont need to be in any battlerecorder servers or have FRAPS lagging down your pc. I can be in a huge firefight and still whoopass with no problem.

If anyone wants to try it you need to use your TV-out on your video card and connect it into your tv-card's input. I actually have mine running into my VCR and then into my tv-card because I didnt have the right S-video cable. After you have it all connected and setup just use virtualdub or whatever program you want that can capture video to an AVI. Vdub also captures audio so thats what I used for my first test.

EDIT: this one is with the correct S-video cable but the video was compressed much more. Its still better quality even with the extra compression.

Im not sure wtf happened but the audio got out of sync when I uploaded it to putfile and those horizontal lines are back again. I think that has something to do with the WMV format because those lines dont show up with the original MPEG file.

I usually use it for recording tutorials on programs and such, but the quality can get really bad with larger recording resolutions.

It was completely random! I was searching google to try to fix a problem my brother is having with his sound card and I came across a post about hooking a playstation up to a tv-card to record console games. BINGO! On comes the little light in my head and out comes my drawer full of wires.

I just tried this out on 6 different programs that capture video and none of them worked as good as virtualdub. Figures the FREE program is the one that out performs all the junk ive payed money for... :|:

Some were stuttering in-game others were fine in-game but the video was stuttering and some werent recording audio even though it was supposed to. Im REALLY glad I used virtualdub first because I might not have even attempted this at all after seeing some of the results.

Now if only I could figure out why its doing that weird blurry thing when I move too fast.

I'm not sure, but I think that's a characteristic of how TV cards/TVs process the picture.

Thats really cool, but my computer is far away from my TV. This should be a sticky or something cause I've never heard of anyone else doing this.

No it doent lag at all. The TV-card hardware is doing all the work. I suppose if you have a crappy hard drive it would start to lag because its writing a pretty large AVI file.

I figured out why it was getting all blurry. To put a long story short, it was virtual dub dropping way too many frames. The longer the video the worse it gets. I found a solution though because someone made a special version of virtual dub with capturing in mind and it fixes all the problems I had. Virtual Dub VCR its called. Google it if you want to check it out.

                    ..that is also singleplayer

edit: youtube butchered the quality of that.

As far as I can tell this is the exact card I have. Im not sure though because it came with my computer when I bought it.

I dont recommend this card (TV-card). I have a friend who has one made by some other company and its noticably better quality when watching TV on his computer. I cant help but think it would be better for what im doing also.

As for graphics, I have a 9800 pro.

The video won't load for me.
It's saying I need to download some kind of windows program, so can watch it

It is indeed a nice way to avoid using Fraps, but don't credit yourself fot this buddy! :) Many people has used this before while recording fragmovies, for example Redux in "Duck & Cover".
