If I made a video for the public to see and I used a complete song produced by an artist. Do I need to seek permission from the artist before I can use it in my video?

Actually you do have to ask for permission. That's the whole thing about copyright: the right to copy your stuff, sell or give rights to others that want to use your stuff and to prevent others who don't have your permission to use your stuff from using it for or as their own work.
Though that doesn't mean that you can't do different creations based on copyright protected things as long as it's not just an imitative of the original one.
That means that a simple usage of a song in a movie will be a copyright violation, if you don't have permission to do so. I highly doubt that anyone will charge you for a non-commercial fan-project though. But you never know ... :hmm:

) is this copyright stuff of songs!

If it's considered a parody than you don't have to copyright it.
Although a parody can be considered a derivative work under United States Copyright Law, it can be protected under the fair use doctrine...Comment

I have written and expressed permission for all my stolen material. I also insist on DNA samples and a written affidavit from the composers who may take me to court and pull the old "switcharoo" and try to pretend that they didn't want me to pirate their awesomeness.

I agree. But if you use a song from a band that is signed to a RIAA Record Label. And your video becomes popular. There is a decent possiblity they will come after you. So what you could do and would be ALOT easier is use music from a unsigned or a band signed to a indie label. They will be ALOT easier to get into contact with. If they ask for money tell`em F-off and move to the next. Go to myspace music thier are millions of bands thier. Alot of them have really good music.Originally posted by sMullComment

So afterall is ok to not seek permission from the artist... Out of 200+ user made bf2 videos, I've never heard of anyone got sued.
