EA´s Battlefield 2: Commanders Seat - officially the worst RTS ever made

Commanders seat, a map, units and bases. Sounds almost like your standard RTS. Clicking the right mouse on a unit opens up a nice menu and there are some cool possibilities, like zooming in for a spectacular battle. Some units even respond to your voice messages, which is definitely good. Somehow those are rare and DICE has fracked it up by hiring way too young voice actors.

So were playing. We get roughly 5-9 units to command with 6 slots in them. Odd, but most of those slots are empty. Nevermind. Chess is also played with single pieces so we start making up an opening move. I know my Starcraft skills come handy here and generally each and every game is predictable. Since opponent is predictable, a simple thought-through move of units will win the game. Allright, so we move 1 to 5 to attack base XXX with UAV support and cast others to either defensive or infiltration missions. The repair box is ready to repair a battletank and orders have been set. Its basically watching how the game will flow.

Somethings wrong. Unit 5 is going where unit 1 should have had to go. And unit 1 has been sitting in air strip for 5 minutes now. The more the time is passing, the more units accumulate at the air strip. Did DICE code in special defensive features to make units protect the most valuable flag the most? Or is this a bug.

Giving out new orders doesnt seem to work and after a brief moment unit count has gone down from 9 total to 3. So theres 3 units that can be commanded and a sh!tload of blue units moving on their own. Sounds kinda neat. Automated units. Then again, things are looking boring. More and more units gather at the air strip. Theres also 2 units at the other side of the map doing negotiations with an opposing unit... with a knife... and defibbrillators?!

So the round ends and we won (!). I close down the game and conclude that the opposing team was probably even worse than my team. And I didnt even do anything.

    Worst RTS ever.

What are you talking about? Did EA come out with some other game that I am not aware of? Or are you just reflecting on how Command Mode seems like a ghey RTS.

GG on Starcraft, my friend and I just pulled out that game to start playing again...and you would not believe how full Battlenet still is!

I had a game a few hours ago and my ping flew up to 800 ms. So I could only command, I had absolutely no fun whatsoever. Except for typing like a madman to deliver all information to everyone. I had zero squads working for me properly and I could not guide the game the way I would have liked to. Waste of time. It brought back memories of my first commander jobs, at the time I played SC a lot. Its a mild joke at uselessness of commanders seat.

It is? My game is collecting dust, every since I got into FPS Ive played it less and less. But Ill be damned if Id play any other RTS more than that game. What a great game.

Well, if I have a team full of people that are not squaded up, then I just run and gun while using my [R]-Command-Comm-Rose to do certain useful things. But sounds like your ping killed it.

And you know what is funny now about playing old RTS games...because I still get out AOE and SC now and then? Is that my current machine is so powerful, that you can't tell when there is a large troop movement or rush anymore. Though the games are old, does not mean they are bad! It is just going back to the classic FPS games that I have trouble with. I pulled out Doom, Quake1 & 2, and Duke Nuke'm and man, I just could not enjoy them at all.

Funny as hell: BF2 seen like a bugged RTS game! The units don't even listen to your commands! I suppose you would have thrown SC right away, if this had happened.
I thought about it myself and this is what I suggested not long ago:

Not many have noticed it, though.
Perhaps there is a way to bring fun back in the commander screen.

Depends on who is in your squads :) My cousin and I always try our best, but yeah, the commander does feel like a really strange RTS with very, very bad AI. But you can't beat zooming right down and watching your ant like minions battle it out in the streets now can you?

gotta say LOL - from RST to the potential of human RTS, all I can say is WOW to the some of the teams I've had to play with

The disaster only seems to happen when there are NO squads and you start to TRY to build units LOL

1 always ends in the middle of know were, with all the team mates attacking individual flags, hopeless

I'd only like to command with a proper team now
