Opening the ports Q?

Is it absolutely nessecary to open the ports as stated in the Tech FAQ? And call me a noob at networking stuff, but when once does open the ports is it file sharing: port # when you're in the network properties of your connection?

When I'm running BF2 online I have my ZoneAlarm firewall shut down as well as any anti-virus/spyware progs that would normally run in the background.

no need to open ports,
just have BF2.exe in the windows firewall exception list,
