Problems updating to 1.4

hi

As the thead says i'm having problems updating to the 1.4 patch
my computer spec is:
AMD Athlon 64 Processor 3000+ 1.8 GHz
with 768 mb of ram
with a Radeon x1300 series 256mb graphics card
Window XP SP 2

Everytime i try to update the patch either fails or crashes at the being or at around 35%. i have try downloading several different patches including both the update 1.3 to 1.4 and the full 1.4 and neither of these work.
The next step is formatting and starting from scratch but thats the last option.

Anyone got any ideas of wat i can do?

i've even tried reinstalling windows and still get either that patch crashing or patch failed.

anyone know what i can do next?

You have closed down all apps and processes in the background before applying patch???? (virus scanners etc)

yep, i reinstalled windows and bf 2 was the first thing i installed and the patch still wouldnt work.
