I double click the desktop icon, screen goes black for a few seconds, then I get my desktop. No error sounds, windows or anything.

Sounds like your refresh rate is too high, this should work but as a precaution back up the video.con file we are about to edit.
Go to your My Documents\Battlefield 2\Profiles\Default and open up the video.con with notepad. On the "VideoSettings.setResolution" line after the resolution (mines 1024x768) their should be the refresh rate change it to a lower refresh rate 60hz to start with would be a good idea. Save the file and boot up the game.
Do the same in the video.con in your player profile folder also.

This was happening to me, reinstalling the game didn't work so i simply uninstalled my graphics drivers, removed all signs of the drivers using drivercleaner (http://www.drivercleaner.net) and then installed the latest drivers and it fixed it.
