i'm using my desk now and it is abused to the point that it looks like i took a wire brush to it.
if you have a good suggestion please post a link so i can order it online.

Re: Mouse pad or no mouse pad?
Laser mice don't need a mousepad to function properly. Optical mice can do without if the mousing surface isn't reflective and isn't scarred up. When I played Jedi Outcast and Academy I put wallpaper on my desk. Make for a huge surface, is nice to your hands, you never fall off. Since then I've gotten a laser mouse and don't use a pad anymore.

Re: Mouse pad or no mouse pad?
For a few bucks you can buy mouse-glides or tapes. They are glued over the original feet and reduce the resistance while moving the mouse + your original mousefeet are protected. You can find them on ebay.
In combination with one of those hard mousepads your mouse flies over the pad without almost any resistance.
It took me few hours to adapt to, but now I don't want to miss them.
