You don't have to buy them but if you want too they are 10 bucks on ea downloader.

Booster packs are not free.

they are optional
they are just new maps
(slightly new jets/helos/tanks = which can only be used on the new maps)

they are cheap - $10 each
and offer enough fun to be worth it
(ie same price a movie and popcorn)
