    Re: why Clans

Clans, guilds, organizations, communities... I've been a part of many of them.

My first "clan" was for the game Jedi Knight II: Dark Forces. Little band of about 8-10 of us called ourselves Saberists of the Jedi or something (stop laughing). That was actually the game where I created my nick name that I still use today. Diffferent games that I've played and been apart of a clan of some sort are Broodwars/Diablo 2, Anarchy Online, Everquest 2, CS:S, Planetarion, a few others.

Clan means "Family", which is an appropriate term , as many of the clans and orgs I took part in were very much an online family.

It started in quakeworld (quake 1).
Today, you see as many if not more clans than you do individual players.
But back then, they were actually a very ostracized minority; most players hated them with a passion.

        Re: why Clans

Clans were the most hated people in the world, as clans were usually the ones attributed with home-made hacks, cheats, cracks, and other things that ruined games. Generally playing against a clanner, meant playing against a cheater.

It was this way up until Quake 2, since everybody was cheating by then.

Clans became very popular around the time of Quake 2, Tribes, and Half Life, when gamers could take part in tournaments for cash prizes. Eventually Counterstrike would evolve clans into professional gamers, and suddenly everybody and their mother wants to be in a clan, as they aspire to win it all.

Thankfully there are many fun-driven clans out there that break free from the monoteny of the second-job known as professional gaming.

I see we have another old-school gamer here.

Props to anyone who knows what this is:
