Tips for being a good sniper

there are 3 key words for being a sniper i call them the 3 Ses

Stealth- Dont move in an open field even if you dont expect enemy activity. ALWAYS scope out the area for infantry or snipers. then snipe them and move along. also try to snipe the enemy from the oposite side of your team meaning if its karkand and your USMC trying to take the hotel then snipe the enemy from the square.

Sabatoage- If you make it to an enemy base lay claymores where you think they will run or if you are sniping lay claymores so they cant knife you.

Survival- If you have been an enemy base awhile got a good number of kills and they are begging to know where you are now would be a good time to pull out and relocate. and if there are alot of enemys dont be afraid to jump in a .50 cal and lay fire but make sure you get out alive.

remember 1 shot to the torso is better then no shots to the head (unless you have time to aim or it would give away your position). once they get shot they will probably look around for cover or panic and try to find who is shooting them. if you are behind them then they will think the fire would be coming from infront of them rather then behind them.

There are some good tips below sent in by other players also

I'd agree with all of your tips except the last one most of the time. I used to only go for torso shots and I ended up not getting many kills, go for the headshot, it's surprisingly easy to do. But it's true, if you know that you will probably miss the head, go for a sure torso rather than a maybe kill.

Yeah I hate it when you shoot a guy, then some other dude from your team finishes him off....

The one thing I've found about sniping is Posistion. Know where the enemy is coming from. Press Caps Lock and look at the flags. If one side is pushing up the flags, then most of the time, 90% of the enemies are going to be between THEIR flag and on their way to YOUR flag. Just be in the right spot ast the right time. slowly creep up on this attack (from a distance) and stay out of the fog range (if applicable) When I'm sniping, i'll get about 5-7 kills before I need to relocate or find the new enemy advance. and like i said, if you're a new sniper and have the M95, USE IT. go for a torso shot. One of three things will happen if you hit. The enemy will go prone not knowing where it's coming from=line up for the money shot. Second thing that might happen is he may comprimise his hiding spot and start bunny hopping all over the damn place trying to find the nearest cover=letting your teamates take him out. And three, he'll continue to hide or whatever, but the next bullet that kills him gives you a KDA. It's really a win win situation. And Always ALWAYS spot the enemy you are shooting at, cause if you get killed between reloads, at least the info is out there for one of your teammates to take care of that pest problem. Once you're getting a kill or a KDA on every shot, then it's time to move to the precious Mac Daddy of sexy sights, the L961A.

            Happy Hunting,

Also, Grab your M94 (the one that takes em down to 2 bars regardless of armour) and park yourself in a spot.

Some unsuspecting enemy walks into ur sights, pop.

              Press 2, (pistol) pop again.

PWNT, with a pistol! Welcome to the world of "how to get your pistol badges"

                Patience, patience, patience!

I have found that waiting for good head shots is far more reliable, and they don't get a chance to spot you to thier friends. I tend to shoot at greater range, so the pistol thing doesn't come up that much.

I seem to have runs of 5-10 kills with ease when i am making good head shots (More in a good hide), but I get targeted very quickly if I'm taking two or three shots to finish them.

I agree ^^ i'd much rather wait for a headshot than go for the torso, they will know where your position is if they manage to get away, chance is they will be behind you in a second with their knife or they will spot you to their team mates

Re: Tips for being a good sniper

First find the good spots - you need areas out of common LOS (line of sight) - sometimes you can lie on a dark but open corner - and because its not on a common path or in the track between two flags you dont get picked up. Make sure you have a good background and never create a silhouette on a skyline.

Use claymores offensively - ie find a common run and put them there - only bother with defensive claymores if you are on top of a hotel/crane etc with one entrance point.

Head shots are the thing to go for. Let a rabbit go rather than spoil your hide, there will be more fodder along in a minute.

Watch for medics, honey-traps - people tend to group with them - you can get multiple kills while they prone and revive.

Moving can get you killed - sometimes it is better to take the shot and risk the death rather than get shot trying to relocate by some grunt with and automatic weapon.

Snipers should forget total scores (points) - they are for aircraft and tank whores - Killeath ratio is God - 10:2 is way way better than 20:18 - K is the mark of sniper skill - everyone else is just playing an arcade game.

Sniping the sniper is the Nuts. Let the boneheads run around all night scoring flags and riding choppers - 2 snipers in a duel is the ultimate rush in BF2.

By the way - the american football clips are fun - but try raking off the pads and the steroids and you'll see why the UK (OZ, NZ, Fr, ....) likes Rugby.

Re: Tips for being a good sniper

some great tips there ppl,ive used most in certain situations myself.

                      here's a few i like to use.

1.when defending a flag(yes defending a flag is worth double points for the kill)patience is key if you see 1 or 2 enemy caping the flag dont fire straight away, let them feel comfortable 1st they usualy stand still then its time for a headshot.

                      2. when in scope scaning for troops and you see a runner coming out of cover moving in on youre flag/position.

dont fire straight away, wait until they have past the mark of no return(i.e from cover A to cover B)

then fire bodyshot if you have to chances are they would not turn back and return to cover they will try and run to cover B.
whitch ever way they chose to run you will have time to get another shot in.

3.if firing at groups of enemys moving in on you location dont get tempted to shoot the closest target aim for the furthest target back if you get the kill chances are the rest wont notice fast enough,if they have a medic that decides to drop back and revive take him out fast, good luck with the rest :)

4.dont move the movment keys when firing this will mess with the deviation a bit and can be the differnce between a headshot and a miss ect.

5.no reloading with 1 bullit left in the clip this could be a kill and any good snipers knows bullits dont last forever and ammo doesnt always come youre way.
ive gone though all my ammo loads of times when on a killing spree.

6.being squad leader can be a good thing when being sniper this helps you and youre team with a good spawn point +you can get ammo+medpacks when needed.but make sure you move with youre squad, also spot threats with youre scope and lay good bodyshot cover fire for team, works good with voip "player xxx hit with l96" squad memeber finish them of easy you get a kda(teampoint)

7.keep track of the scoreboard for enemy sniper kills then if possible engange,i like sharki for sniper engagements some are over pretty fast and they end up chosing other kits, some get mad and stalk you, other simply dont know when to quit(ages ago i remeber soe guy killed me from tv station on sharki,so i found a good spot and got my revenge kill:) this went on for the rest of the round i killed him 9 times, lucky for me he wasnt that good:)

i have met some snipers that give me my moneys worth when it comes to a duel.

8.practice bullit drop in single player(yes bots are easy)but not easy when firing from 400m,this is good to get the feel for bullit drop and lead.

a bit long of a post but not very often a good sniper thread pops up :)

Re: Tips for being a good sniper

These tips cover the use of a sniper taking the utmost care to remain undetected. I'd like to touch on another, surprisingly effective way to play the sniper, which I like to call the "active sniper". This is now a very viable way to play sniper on IO mode, particularly as going prone or crouching leaves you very open to being sniped or shot yourself...

The ideal map for this is Road to Jalalabad although I've had success in most maps. :)

First of all it's a bit of a misconception that a sniper has to be in the crouch position or prone to gain good accuracy. Shooting from a standing position can give extremely good results, as long as you're using the scope and not moving during the shot of course.

So, this mode assumes you're standing and if you're standing you'd better be moving, as a moving target is obviously harder to hit. As I said above, the only restrictions you must adhere to are using the scope and remembering to stop moving when taking the shot. If you're in an area that has some impassable terrain or is a common thoroughfare, then drop your claymores at the entry points to your position. The reason Jalalabad is especially good for this is because of the large open areas surrounding the first two cappable MEC flags coupled with the fairly standardised route the infantry have to take, and the reason IO is handy is because there's guaranteed more infantry!

So, why not just play the normal, secretive way I hear you say? Well, the simple answer is because in IO mode there's now going to be a lot more snipers out there. If you're spotted first, you're toast if you're crouched or prone. So, by removing that out of the equation, you're essentially basing the shootout between yourself and other snipers/infantry solely on skill and not just on who spots who first. As most snipers (and most other kit players for that matter) still tend to go prone for a firefight as a matter of course, this makes your job a whole lot easier and gives you the upperhand. :)

Ok, so what happens if you're in close to medium range situations then? Well, this requires a bit of old skool CS action. Take your shot with the sniper rifle (don't go for heads shots this time) and if you get any sort of registered hit at all, immediately switch to pistol and only one more hit should complete the job and they'll be wondering how they got owned by a sniper at close range... If there's more than 1 or you miss your shot, then retreat and drop any claymore(s) and then take out your pistol. Even if they kill you there'll be a good chance your claymore(s) will give you some kind of retribution once they're armed. :>

One tip for the L961A which is the best sniper rifle btw, is to aim just a mm or so above the head when aiming at medium to long range. The reason for this is there's a slight bullet drop.

That's all. Have fun and look to increase your SPM and KPM using the active sniper role. :)

Nice tips and i dont know either i think it is good going for the headshots cuz it gets them done. once they get a bullet to the torso they run like a mofo. I think the key is only go for headshots when u know u will get it lol. Btw Great tips

go to a map with lots of Close Quarters Battles. lay a few claymores and within a minute you shoud get at least 1 kill. Also try to be fast if you are in medium range combat make sure you get your scope out fast and get a head shot.

Also try to play on servers close to your location. IF you live in Japan sniping would be alot harder on a US east coast server then on one in japan or indonesia.
