    Simple answer: Yes

Although it depends if your running a nice rig that you want to max out the setting on BF2 with its worth buying another gig to bring yourself up to two gigs.

i would go for at least 1.5 gigs since ram really isnt that expensive

        I have a AMD Athlon 64 3400+, 1gig of RAM, PNY GeForce 7300 GS 256mb PCI-Express, 200gig HD.

        I maxed out my RAM slots (4x 256mb = 1gig of RAM) I can get 2x 512mb replacing 2x 256mb I have now, giving me 1536mb of RAM.

Is it worth making my pc run on 1536mb of RAM? Will I see that much of a differance?

2GB of RAM: Do We Really Need That Much?

          https://www.xbitlabs.com/articles/me...y/2gb-ram.html

          Applications? NO
          Most Games? NO
Some Games? YES (FEAR, BF2, Q4)
          Future Games? YES

          .
And my favorite part about the article: more than 2 gigs is for PROFESSIONALS ONLY!*

*for the fools who had to fill all their slots for nothing more than e-peni :)

the performance specs from 1 gig ram to 2 gig is less that something like 7%

i saw it on g4 one day. it was an old g4 tech show not the lame stuff they have now.

actually no...the 7300 isnt that great of a card and 1 gig will be sufficient for that card so its not worth the trouble to get some more ram and putting it in

but if u upgrade to something a lot better like a 7800 or 7900...2 gigs will be nice

1 gig is great for setting's most on high/ meduim if you have the monney it's worth geting 2 beacouse you can ramp setting's up to the max and the exstra ram's there if you need it, but there is no point if you dont have a video card that can handel high with good frame rates say 60+

RAM isn't about performance, but about loading times and / or lags.

With 1GB RAM @ 1280*1024 everything maxed out, it takes 1 minute to load and 1 minute to verify, and there are some lags at the start of every round for about 2 minuts. The lags are gradually gone.

I assume 2GB will reduce the loading times and will put an end to the lags at the start of each round. Same as for you.

Actually, you need to replace your ram either way. There is a significant difference in peformance between the various ways of building 1gb of system ram.

1x1gb stick is better than two 512mb sticks which is better than 4x256. also, make sure your mobo can handle odd numbers if you're going to be shooting for 1.5gb. The cheapest and best alternative is to replace your 256's with 2x512mb. It's cheap, and it'll help your system out a lot. Just make sure to get at least pc3200.

If you're pretty happy with the peformance that you're getting right now, then that, and some system optimization (free, but you'll have to do some research), and you'll see a significant improvement. But if you're looking for a dramatic change, like being able to increase your settings for example, then you're going to be sorely disappointed.

Unfortunately it's not that cut and dry. I have 2gb, a 10k rpm raptor drive, and still have load and verification times close to the 2 minute mark. There's a lot of stuff creating that delay and it's not all ram based. To say 1gb of ram equals 1 minute and another 1 minute is misleading. If I run all high and 4xaa (through the BF2 menue) then I've got about a 2 minute map load, including verification. But if I drop my settings down, which I have a second profile for that helps me practice sniping etc, then my load time is about 30 seconds total.

I think you are confused (?)

Dual Channel (say 512X2) is better than only one stick (1X1024), that's for sure. Don't know about 4X256, but by common-sense it's also better than 1X1024, maybe than 2X512.
Are you sure one stick is better than two?

Having two sticks running in dual channel is the best set up, by having one stick you cant run dual channel, and using 4 sticks wont allow you to run your memory at 1T.

Back to the original topic, The first poster may not see any major improvements by getting another gig of ram. He is using a 7300 which will only run low/medium settings so the need for loads of ram isnt there.

Eh, I didn't actually mean run one stick of 1gb ram by itself. I was just saying that it's overal better to run higher capacity better quality ram, than to stack up on older less capacity. So when I said 1gb I meant two, teh only reason I said 1 was because it's impossible to put 2gb of ram out of 256mb sticks into a mobo, and I wanted the comparison to equal each other =P

I hadn't slept in 40 hours and was a little retarded. Happy to announce that I've gotten 7 hours of sleep since then =P
